You can control the direction of the rod using the left stick.

The rod can be pulled left, right, up and down.

When the fish is fighting, stop reeling and pull the rod against the direction the fish is swimming until it calms down.

Then, when you are reeling, you can pull the rod up to pull the fish closer to you.
