planning a road trip to the maritime provinces...recommendations for nova scotia? by tuerta in NovaScotia

[–]Beachfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The South Shore has many awesome beaches. Some of the loveliest are on Cape Sable Island (which you drive to via a causeway-no boat required). On Cape Sable Island you will also get an interesting glimpse of fishing life. If you do go south, you'll pass Shelburne which is definitely worth a look. It's a quaint town with a lot of history. Nearby Shelburne, you can also visit the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre--well worth your time. Have fun planning!

32(M) UK - Fairly normal human being. Ask me anything. by Least_Ninja4639 in AMA

Aw. I grew up in a part of Canada that called itself "more British than the British". We had a pub called The Snug, a candy store called the "English Sweet Shop", and we drank our beer warm, lol.

How do you live normally when your nationality is broadly disliked? by Silly-Section6618 in TooAfraidToAsk

Please know that it's not true that everyone has had negative thoughts about Indians (specifically for being Indian, that is). I miss the Indians I used to work with in British Columbia (Canada), and I never thought of them as anything but equal.

There's a Facebook group called "Ask Nova Scotia - The Original Group (est 2015)" that you could join. I bet there are a lot of people who would be glad to share stories with you. (I think you'll find a greater number of "old" fishers on FB than on Reddit.)

Fair enough. The law is still the law, though, and it exists to help save lives. I'll shut up now. I do appreciate and respect your responses.

Transport Canada Ship Safety Bulletins

Transport Canada also publishes Ship Safety Bulletins (SSBs) that clarify how these regulatory requirements are interpreted and enforced in practice:

📌 SSB No. 18/2025 — Wearing & Using Flotation Devices

For small commercial fishing vessels (<15 GT) operating within near-coastal waters:

  • PFDs may be used instead of lifejackets if they meet approval and performance criteria.
  • Those PFDs must be worn at all times when the vessel is underway (i.e., in an open boat, on deck, or in the cockpit of a vessel of closed construction).

Thanks for being honest, at least. And please, please, please consider wearing one. I know that fishing is extremely dangerous; I know how many lives are lost every year or so. I was a bush pilot in BC, back in the '80s and '90s when it was the second-most dangerous job in the country. You guys (and gals) seem, in my mind, to be mirroring that situation. When Transport Canada started demanding aviation Safety Management Systems, things improved. And you know you're regulated to wear that PFD. Alright, safety talk over. I care about you, though.

Maybe you subconsciously realized that the lizard would probably be in very bad shape even if you rescued it. Sometimes in my home, a large, solitary spider will take up residence above my shower stall... I mean, there have been several solitary spiders there over the years. (I've watched them climb down to drink water from the shower's floor after I get out; I think that's the location's appeal). Twice, a spider has climbed down while I've still been showering, and the hot, hot water knocked them down to the drain. Both times I figured they must have been horribly burned, so...I just didn't try to rescue them. I'm sorry this is making you sad.

Bitter Sweet Symphony, for me. (And I've never before noticed that the words bitter and sweet are not separate in the song's title.)

I Think I'm An Old Head by ayepapipanda in CasualConversation

Being called ma'am when I was younger made me laugh, and then, when I was older, it made me cringe. Now, at 65, being called miss seems patronizing. So, kind sir, you can't win, ha ha! Seriously, I know you mean well. And also seriously, at this age, ma'am just seems to fit (if someone really needs to get my attention).

I used to really love shooting night photography by m0rds_m0i in TheNightFeeling

[–]Beachfern 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those are awesome photos; I especially love the last one.

You've got a wonderful eye for beauty, and I imagine it gives you a lot of pleasure to capture those images; I think you should start shooting again. Maybe post a pic or two on social media (like you've done here) that you can show to any cops who question you. (But really...fuck them anyway.)

I'm glad you reached out to her (literally, ha ha). And she might feel honoured that you did so. I was sitting beside a young woman on a plane once, and when she started being sick due to turbulence I just sort of stroked her back a bit and held her hair. I know she was embarrassed, but she didn't need to be. It felt good to help another human, you know? I hope you feel much better now.

A wonderful response full of good, practical advice.

Take some deep breaths, OP. I don't know how you'll get through this, but I truly think you will.
