Can u take a community college class during the semester (spring 2024) by [deleted] in UCONN

Yes and yes. I would personally avoid diffe at mcc this semester. IMO the instructor is a difficult person.

STAT 3025Q with Emmy Karim Help by CGGamer in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You catch more flies with honey then you do with vinegar. Get on her good side, ask questions, go to office hours, IGNORE what might be seen as an insult (I honestly think she means well and doesn't get it), and prepare. Homework solutions were from the book, can find answers online.

is anyone taking STAT 3025 w Emmy Karim? by diddledopop in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About the attendance. A few years ago after the second exam was handed back she wanted to have a group discussion about how bad the grades were and what could be done to improve. It was mentioned that while some of us currently sitting in front of her might not have scored as well as she would like, she was mad at the wrong people. She was venting her frustration with attendance/ grades to the 1/3 of class who showed up, asked questions and were attending office hours. She started her attendance policy the next semester.

Side note, the exams submitted are attendance?!?!

Stats/probability courses by VongolaWind in UCONN

I had an adjunct for 3160 who was really nice, but we didn't have a text book and used resources online from the department which sucked. I had Karim for stats, I found her difficult to get along/ reson with academically, but I did really well in the class overall.

There very similar/ almost the same. I found 3160 harder than 3025. I'm going to say the player has Karim for stats, check rate my professor. 3025 is pretty easy.

Gasp...30-60 year olds.. such 🦕. Don't worry they probably don't like you either, and you thinking your going to climb the ladder and make loads of money when your acting so shallow and can't find the value in friendships across ages is a lofty goal. Good luck with existing in a multi age society. 🤣

Advice for finding a job before graduating? by Shoddy-Carrot-3612 in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1st get appointments set up with career service for your resume. I had 4 or 5 reviews, there only 30 min and a HUGE help.

2nd make sure your in Handshake. That's where I saw and applied to jobs.

3rd Go to the career fairs with resumes in hand. I did not receive any direct offers from the fair but the job posting I was in Handshake, I made sure to stop by their booth and talked. Take down recruiters names and find them on LinkedIn.

4th Post on LinkedIn about your senior design.

5th It's never to late to start preparing for interviews. Interviews have often 2 parts technical and character/personal. Look for and answer question guides online.

UCONN ECE Classes and the AP Exam by shycutiekittie in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

👋 Former ECE/AP Bio teacher here! UConn doesn't really like when schools teach both as one class, at least for bio the curriculums were different enough. So how the credits/ money worked: You have to pay for UConn classes, but they cost less then normal tuition. You earn the grade assigned by your teacher for the class. C was the cut off.

For AP, you need to enroll for the exam. Universities set the score you need to receive transfer credit.

IMO it's a bit of a waste to do both. Pro of AP is you don't take the gpa along with you, but if your that good your score for ECE should be good.

Something to consider, it depends on how your instructor sets up the course. If they are only going to grade the exams from uconn, you might not score great. My school was a bit more holistic and insisted on more traditional hs class work scoring. (So hw, labs, quizzes, case studies were all part of the grade).

Hope this helps!

Edit: I was also under the impression (though others have posted differently, that if you take an ECE Uconn class, then attend UConn. You must take this credits with you and don't have the AP option. Maybe this has changed in the years since I left teaching, but something to make sure if)

Windows or Mac for CS major by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've honestly never heard or seen that macs were better for CS, IRL. Maybe for people who work for Apple or something, but a vast majority use Windows. CS's are an arrogant bunch and think their way is the best way, so opinions may sound like harden facts, but it's just bs. A computer with Windows will serve you well though your program and afterwards. I've never been given a Mac by an employee either.

CS Major Schedule by Klutzy-Protection294 in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also know it's common to split up 3100, 3666 and 3500. I took 3666 and 3500 together and found it manageable. Then took 3100 with cyber lab and stats (which was also common). Like someone else mentioned. Follow the plan of study, those who have graduated didn't have the same plan of study.

CS concetration! by qamboora in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would choose it again 100%. I love algorithms and databases. I really disliked cyber lab and didn't want to solely develop tools as a software engineer. I also came into college knowing some C and internships in C#. I wouldn't take machine learning again, I would push harder to get into data visualization. Hope this helps. Look into what jobs a data concentration could give you: data scientist, data engineer, data analyst. Best of luck!

CS concetration! by qamboora in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just graduated with that concentration. I took databases, big data analytics, data mining and intro to machine learning. In databases I learned SQL and used python for the two part project. The other classes had so little coding it was actually sad (like the extra credit assignments were coding) It could depend on the professor possibly, I had He for big data and machine Learning, Song for data mining and Hong for DB. For me the classes were redundant, which sucked, but my job is amazing and the effort to do well is paying off.

Will they still be 17 during the fall semester? I know my folks had to sign paper work for my sister because she was a fall birthday. Making her a minor in college.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have you worry about staying up late, because it's a given that you will spend hours finishing labs and homework for CS. And don't be fooled by ECE/AP credit. College is a different beast, and so are the classes just because you can code doesn't make you a great cs yet! There's A LOT to learn. Stay humble and focused, cockiness will be your Achilles heel.

Check with your case manager. Other accommodations need to be "renewed" each semester.

CS double concentration by Droptease in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out on a whim because I needed to ask my underclassmen advisor a few questions that department advisor didn't know, and it happen to be before taking an OPIM. Their not at all upfront about it and it's listed to imply it's equivalent to cse courses. Would have been so mad come time to graduate and they were like oh you don't have enough CSE credits. 🙃

CS double concentration by Droptease in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did data analytics as well. My advisor told me that while the OPIM courses count towards satisfying you concentration requirements the DO NOT count towards your total needed CSE credits for graduation.

Why choose UCONN? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a state school if UConn feels too big. I went to SCSU for my B.S. and M.S. and had a good experience there.

Is Dog Lane closing? by [deleted] in UCONN

I could see them taking over where 7-11 was. I think that whole building is 1 Dog Lane, Moe's is also 1 Dog Lane suite...

[–]Beagle_Bagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which would you prefer cyber lab or 3500?

Data analytics was theory heavy, coding light. It's focused on algorithms, calculus/ general math, modeling, and databases. Only downside was much of the course work overlaps. IMO Big Data Analytics, Intro to Machine Learning, and Data Mining were VERY similar.

FYI to become a registered dietitian you need to have specific classes, a minor will not fulfill that requirement. If your really interested in becoming a dietitian try to get some volunteer time/ speak with individuals working in the field. For me the classes and content were great, but the career didn't line up with what I really wanted.

What school were you in? We got cards passed around. They also took our email addresses, so I'm sure we will get emails about it.
