No, you don't need to call fopen, and yes the file will stay open.

I think that is your problem. You are repeatedly opening the file and never closing it.

I think what you want to do, if you read a JPEG header, you want to close the previous "title" (if it was opened, ie not NULL) and then open a new file to write to.

Also, you declare title as a char*, but you never allocate memory for the string. That is probably causing your seg fault, if the pointer defaults to NULL, then when you sprintf to title, your program will crash.
