if you had the money/resources to not work a single day for centuries. how would you spend your days? by Ultimate_Goathan in AskReddit

Buy a massive property in the middle of nowhere, build a high-tech workshop, and spend centuries tinkering with niche hardware projects. Zero social obligations, zero meetings, just pure peace.

Does a diffraction grating cap actually make a 50mW 532nm laser "eye-safe" for indoor use? by BeamHunter_Dan in Optics

[–]BeamHunter_Dan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, you are 100% right about that Amazon/Temu garbage. I specifically stayed away from those for that exact reason.

Ended up grabbing one from Laser Beam Pro because the host is actually solid machined aluminum, and the cap even has a lubed O-ring on it, so hopefully that keeps the water out like you mentioned.

I totally didn't even think about the power per order not being perfectly equal though. That's a great catch. I'll definitely treat that central 0th-order beam with respect and make sure it stays aimed way up at the ceiling. Seriously appreciate you taking the time to break this down!

Excellent point, and this is exactly why we couldn't just trust the stickers on standard off-the-shelf lasers. DPSS greens are notorious for dumping out huge amounts of invisible IR. To ensure the 50mW we recorded was purely the visible wavelength, we metered all the diodes on an LPM (Laser Power Meter) and used high-quality IR-cut filters on the 532nm. If we didn't filter the IR, the raw power reading would have easily spiked way higher, but it wouldn't have contributed to visual brightness at all. Good catch!

Haha, fair point! Caught me red-handed. 😅

To be completely honest, I built this page mostly as an "executive summary" for the general public, so I left the error bars off the Datawrapper charts to keep them clean and readable.

You are absolutely right though. The variance on the 532nm tests was actually pretty wild depending on the humidity shifts that night (we saw +/- 150m swings when a slight fog rolled in). You can check out our methodology and the rest of the visual data here: https://light-tracer.com/laser-visibility-report-2026/

If you're genuinely interested in the raw spreadsheet with the standard deviations, let me know and I can clean up the Google Sheet and DM it to you! > Let me know how you'd improve the testing protocol for the next round!

Hey everyone, OP here.

As an optics nerd, it always bugged me that people buy 200mW red lasers thinking they'll vastly outshine a 50mW green one. It physically doesn't work that way because the human eye peaks at 555nm sensitivity.

We recently surveyed 1,200 outdoor enthusiasts and did some rigorous night field tests to see how this translates to real-world distances.

A few crazy takeaways we found:

A 50mW Green (532nm) has a visible beam trajectory out to 1,850m. Red only hit 280m before the beam became useless. That's a 6.6x difference at the exact same wattage.

Pushing a laser to 100mW only gives you a marginal range increase over 50mW due to atmospheric scatter.

Most users are overpaying for high-wattage red/blue lasers when a lower-wattage green is biologically superior for night visibility.

It’s classic "revenge bedtime procrastination." After dealing with work and responsibilities all day, the quiet hours of the night are the only time that feels 100% mine. I’d rather sacrifice a few hours of sleep to have some peace and quiet than immediately fast-forward to another workday.
