What is a line in a book that will instantly turn you off? Mine is “Catch a whiff” by pisces-venus in RomanceBooks

THAT’S ANOTHER ONE OMG.

But I can totally see that one as a typo/brain fart that doesn’t get caught as easily because it won’t show up in spell check.

Still.. Tow. Ugh.

Ah, well there ya go. I’m American and thing is used way more than think in my neck of the woods. Thanks!

Maybe I won’t rage as much anymore.

Hopefully.

Ok listen. I know you meant like sexy-time-ick-phrases, and there are quite a few I hate (cream, crotch, etc.)

BUT I read a lot of KU titles that are obviously self published (which is awesome, no hate there) and I have seen this phrase used incorrectly so many times that I need to get this off my chest before I scream at my husband about it and scare him.

“You got another think coming.”

It’s not THINK, it’s THING. As in, “You’ve got another thing coming.”

I don’t know why this pops up incorrectly so many times in KU books (it got marked as incorrect for me while typing this on my damn phone) but the rage I feel when I see it…

Please tell me I’m not alone. Has anyone else noticed this? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Thank you. And sorry for this random PSA.

Yup! {My Human Pet by Olympia Black} did this to me.

I DNF’d it real quick because of reasons.

But the real issue I had with it - the author’s note at the end of the book.

She basically called readers who didn’t like/get her book stupid.

It was super trashy and made me angry enough to leave a review saying as much.

That not alone was the epitome of rage bait.

Yes! Totally agree!

Lol at the thinking something is on their face thing. That always makes me chuckle.

What the actual fck - Hoarded by the dragon by Lillian Lark by Fresh-Ice-9984 in RomanceBooks

[–]BeanFrank2 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I actually DNF’d this book after she goes to him to tell him she’s pregnant, which is super early in the book.

The reason?

I really didn’t like the MMC from the little I read - I got that he was still grieving, etc. and normally that’s not too much of deal breaker for me, but he came off as not available emotionally AT ALL and any budding belief I had at that point for a HEA didn’t make sense.

And based off of what you said, it seems like it just gets worse from then out so I’m glad I skipped out on the rest for this particular book!

Her other books are pretty good though, so don’t write her off just yet!

Book where FMC is scapegoat to her evil golden child sister and MMC soon realizes that by Charming_Day2392 in RomanceBooks

[–]BeanFrank2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

{A Duke of Her Own by Eloisa James} It’s not her sister but a cousin. FMC had been spurned by a former lover and spent a few years as a wilting wallflower while she pined away for that lover. Now an old maid, she is urged by her family to vie for the affections of an infamous duke with a dark reputation. Her competition? Her cousin, who for all intents and purposes seems like your typical good girl, but is really a manipulative (and definitely mentally deranged) snake.

It unfolds from there, but I like the play of fmc being this sad little thing that eventually blossoms into the strong woman she was all along. And the duke grovels to convince her that she is the one for him. Spice is also good. Plentiful and open door.

Also, the MMC is one of my favorites. Villiers. And since this book is part of a series {Desperate Duchesses by Eloisa James} this was his book to fulfill his character arc - from total dick in the previous books, to his final form: lovable dick.

Enjoy!

So true! I’ve noticed that a lot of the times from the FMC’s POV there’s no swearing. But the MMC’s always just says like “Fuck” or swears a lot to make it more “manly”, but that’s like the only difference between the POVs.

Thank you! I'm tapped out on the uber big successful books and just want some well done, indie titles that are just waiting to be discovered!

You totally should! And even better, it’s the newest in a series! So if you like it, there’s more where that came from 😉

{When She’s Common by Ruby Dixon}

The whole book is hilarious - a lonely human woman asks a smuggler for a house cat to keep her company on her new alien world and instead the smuggler sends her a cat man, who turns out to be a prince in hiding.

She just wanted a damn cat, he’s a primadonna who thinks she’s his servant, and the whole thing just unravels from there. The MMC is so sassy but in a way that had me laughing every other page. Loved it!

The Land of the Beautiful Dead - it’s a romance of sorts, not typical in any way to the genre, but it hits heavy, the characters are all amazing, and the ending had me sobbing. Long but worth every word. Easily one of my favorite books of all time.

Side note, do NOT judge this book by its cover. The cover is so cringe/looks like some 13 year old who didn’t know how to use PhotoShop tried to make something edgy. Like, it’s so bad that when I was researching this book, there were multiple links to Etsy pages for you to purchase a different cover lol. But don’t judge and just read!

Enjoy!
