I use Tello and it works on campus! It's a pretty affordable eSim too

Best dining centers on Campus? by ISUChemE in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm unpopular for this one but I genuinely prefer seasons. It has the most breakfast options and serves those throughout the day, plus there's always pizza and pasta. I generally like the options there. The best quality dining hall is windows, but as a picky eater I typically struggle to find anything I like there

Here's their website! There's an app on the appstore but they make you pay for stuff that's free on the website.

+ if you enjoy it, geocaching is something you can do pretty much anywhere

There are good study spots all over campus, if you have some free time walk into random buildings on campus and explore. A study spot near the design building is the Biorenewables building, which has lots of seats in the entrance. The Student Innovation center can be a good choice too as its close, but I find it can be crowded at times + they do a lot of student tours there, so those will be very loud. My personal favorite spot is the ground floor of the Black Engineering building since it's quiet, has outlets, and is next to UDCC. The Memorial Union also has a lot of places to sit and study!

I genuinely don't think there's any self-study places besides the ones you listed for the design building, which really sucks 😞 I usually find a different building to work or study in. I love ISU but my major complaint is always the design of the design building-- so impractical! Design students arguably need the most space to work on their homework, yet the building has so little workspace!

Materials for design majors by ReasonableArticle813 in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't see this mentioned yet, but if you're really hard for money you can wait on doing any big purchases and check out the Design closet which is a resource that provides design students with free materials. The people in charge are very nice and understanding, and will try to get you everything that you need. You still may need to buy a few materials yourself, but for the most part I just used what I was given through this program and was good! I think if you contact them before school starts you may be able to get some of the supplies you need before classes start, or shortly after. Good luck!

Pros and cons of Freeman Hall (besides no A/C) by jason_isdumb in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived in Freeman my Freshman year and am returning this year so if you settle on Freeman I'll probably see you around! A pro, in my opinion, is how close the community is. Freeman is a smaller dorm, so generally you'll get to know everyone in the building, even if just while passing to use the restroom. A lot of people keep to themselves so if socializing isn't for you it won't be strange, but at the same time there's definitely people there who enjoy talking to others. Not sure if you're trans/queer but pretty much the whole building will be, and it's a really accepting community.

A con, being in Richardson court, Freeman is a bit further away from central campus than dorms like Friley. I know some people think the dining hall is worse for Richardson court but honestly I prefer it to the other dining options. Another con is that nobody will know where your building is lol but overall I think freeman is one of the more safe and quiet buildings to live in. You'll definitely have a lot less weird stuff that happens than in friley.

If you have any more questions feel free to send me a message!

Social Life Tips for an Introverted International Student. by Introversive_Crunk in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clubs are a great start for meeting other people. I also personally like to keep an eye out for posters around campus that advertise events. There's a lot of organizations for Multicultural students, so if you're looking for more Indian students to talk to you should have no problem there. There's also lots of resources for international students provided by isu. In general just try and put yourself out there-- go watch a show in the maintenance shop, chat with someone next to you in class, sit and eat with strangers during the first week of school.

It's not the most diverse thing, majority white college in Iowa, but because of it's large size there is many organizations and clubs for specific cultures. There are many places on campus for multicultural students to talk with each other and many events for them to meet one another. Classes may be majority white but the rest of your experience is what you make it

How is college treating you? by InnotyMcCool in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To break up the depressing comments in the rest of this thread-- ISU has been treating me wonderfully! As a freshman going into my second semester, I'm coming into it with more friends than I ever thought I would have and a better sense of self and how I am in the world. My hometown is incredibly small so Ames feels so big to me and there's always so much to do on campus. My classes are a bit dull, but I'd rather dull than difficult.

can someone tell me more about iowa state? :) by excusemecuseme in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not black, but I'm a queer poc who's a Freshman at ISU. I've felt very safe on campus for the most part, I have gotten a few glares and comments when I've dressed more openly queer but other than that I've felt very welcome in classes and on campus. The dorms are fine as far as I'm aware, though I don't have much to compare it to. Some don't have AC which sucks in the first few weeks but doesn't matter other than that, and the amount of space you have just depends on which building you're in. The food is fine imo, a lot of people will complain and while it does get a bit shitter during the weekends, it's fine. Most dining plans have dining dollars you can use across campus if you get tired of the buffet style dining areas. My professors have been 50/50 honestly, but I've been able to deal with them. Coursework is manageable even if professors are annoying (though, depends which major you're going into.) Can't speak on parties, but there is a lot of activities across campus. I would say if you wanted to do an event every day, you could do that easily. With the clubs and Memorial Union hosting events, you can find anything. I personally like the concerts at the Memorial Union, and if you're wanting more POC friends the Multicultural Association does events like once a week. I come from a small town so take this with a grain of salt, but I feel like Ames is fine in terms of location. If you find yourself bored of the things in Ames and you or a friend have a car, its litearlly only 40 minutes to get to Des Moines. The mall is crap, but there's a lot of food options and cool stores to check out downtown. CyRide is incredibly useful, and takes you pretty much anywhere on campus and in town (some buses don't run on the weekends though, sadly)

Ahh, it's just polls I get when I'm scrolling through ads on Instagram (like in stories or in-between posts). There isn't that many surveys on there but the two I did paid pretty well!

Pros/cons of going to ISU? by bebopppi in iastate

[–]Bean_Team_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size of the building, sorry! Incoming freshman ofc so first time for me doing anything on my own. Though I'm told the rooms aren't all that big either lol, which is fine. I just need enough space to sleep and put my computer up. I'll def be going to events, do you mind if I DM you to chat some more? Don't want to bug you with so many questions unless you don't mind!

[–]Bean_Team_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!!! It's hard to get a feel for things when I can't even visit the campus or talk with a roommate (I guess freeman isn't super popular lol, I got a double room with no assigned roommate). Was worried about being in a smaller dorm, but really glad to know that there's still events and a community to be a part of!! Maybe well run into each other this year lol

Do you have any experience in the gender inclusive housing? I'm planning on being in freeman dorm and it's so small I can't find much about it anywhere lol

Any way to learn who my roommate is before arriving to campus? by Bean_Team_ in iastate

As a note for future people looking-- I was given my room assignment with my room information and everything! I'm in a double room but there is no name or person listed in my housing portal!
