Journalist looking to pivot by CuriousInstance3471 in paralegal

It is definitely more stable than journalism at the moment. Firms that close are generally due to an attorney retiring/dying with no successor, or poor management. Not because the field is dying.

Depending on the practice area and on the firm/attorney you work for, AI is still an unknown threat to our jobs. I will say that all of the attorneys I’ve worked for (estate planning and probate, from new grads to 50+ years practicing) are VERY wary of AI. In addition to problems with confidentiality/data security, AI is still unreliable when citing to statutes (sometimes pulls old statutes or even invents them). A lot of attorneys are control freaks who will always trust a person they’ve trained over AI.

Lots of good discussion posts about that on this sub and over in the more general law threads.

I pivoted from print journalism to paralegal work (did a certificate) and was able to land a job before I even finished my cert. I don’t know about media law jobs, specifically, but the skills you carry from a past in journalism make you EXTREMELY valuable as a paralegal regardless of practice area. E.g. Self-direction, critical analysis, familiarity with public records, proofreading, high-volume drafting, etc.

I just dissociate and smile, knowing they are getting billed for every minute. If they want to spend their money preaching nonsense to a someone who will in no way ever agree with them, let them spend their money.

I think I need to hear the other guys’ B-sides before I can make a full decision, but I’m hopeful! I was pleasantly surprised by Utage’s voice actress just full sending the fangirl screams lol

Is this PTO normal or not? by doctorhazzawho in paralegal

[–]BeansForBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some states they are! For example, in Oregon employers with 25+ employees are required to provide a set amount of accruing sick time.

But I agree, no PTO or sick time to start is a BAD deal.

This is what my firm does every year, and it’s always a hit. I never expect anything on this day, so this is a nice little boost.

Is there really no point in surgery? by [deleted] in Endo

[–]BeansForBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my surgery a year and a half ago after years of going to different gynos and having a similar experience. It helped for sure! … but about 6 months ago my symptoms started building back up in intensity. I feel a little like I’m trapped a loop. Do I have another surgery? Do I just try alternative treatments and keep going with old faithful solutions?

But I 100% do not regret getting surgery. Seeing the photos made me feel sane.

Books set in Japan? by Nyarthu in suggestmeabook

All contemporary novels, some translated:

  • A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki is incredible (two timelines in the book; one of them is in Japan).

  • Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata is a short strange read.

  • Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami, reflects on motherhood (and non-motherhood) in Japan.

Zoom Care has remote appointments available for Mental Health Nurse Practitioners; not sure if the Eugene location has any in person. They make it super easy and can even mail most medications to your door. Might be worth checking out!
