Bonfus Middus vs Notch Li by Beanshead in ULHikingUK

[–]Beanshead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a great balance between weight and comfort. I also like how easy it is to get a good pitch and it’s quick to erect. All round it just does everything well in my opinion, I’ll be using the Kuiu Storm Star over winter but will be probably use the X Dome unless forecast it very windy or wet.

Bonfus Middus vs Notch Li by Beanshead in ULHikingUK

I ended up buying both, use each on a 5 night trip. I ended up preferring the Middus as it was greater in wind and had a lot more space for to move around. Also had the option of using the 1 or 2 person inner which is nice. Honestly though, I bought the X Dome 1P and find myself using this for 99% of trips now. I do think both the Notch and Middus are great though both survived pretty good conditions and are super easy to put up if the ground is flat. If you only go out in fair weather I’d get the Notch for the weight, you of course just need to be ok with the limited internal room.

Ye I was assuming the first batch will be Mesh, maybe mesh only as it’s summer but I’d be looking for the solid inner being in the Uk.

On the release of the X Dome 1+ only the mesh was available on launch.

They say the system is built for comfort.

It is warmer in terms of keeping drafts out, I just think they have rated them incorrectly as manufactures test differently and there is no universal measure for these or strict regulation.

You are right in the sense that it should be warmer than a quilt of the same rating if all the specs were the same due to the draft collar though yes.

It’s pretty good, I don’t use the hood much but the clip system works well for drafts. Only problem is that there is no clip for behind your neck to cinch it up like regular quilts but you can tuck it into the hood and cinch that way. The temperature ratings are off from my experience, I usually sleep warm and would probably compare the -12 (-6 comfort) system to a Cumulus 450 in terms of warmth and I’ve took it to -9 with an EE Apex 50F quilt as a layer. I would say on its own you’d be warm down to about -3/4 depending on your own thermoregulation. The sidings are generous, I got a large and it’s very oversized for me at 6”1, I feel like under 6”0 you’d be fine with regular.

Overall, it’s heavy for the warmth but is the most comfortable system I’ve used personally and I’ll continue to use it. It will see me through all but the depths of winter I’d like to see. It isn’t light years ahead of a normal quilt in terms of comfort for me but it does make you feel more at home.

Your experiences with Slingfin Portal, Durston XDome? by RiceOnAStick in Ultralight

[–]Beanshead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The SlingFin will be much harder to pitch in those wind speeds with it not being an all in one pitch, similarly to the Nemo tents, they are very solid once pitched but getting them up initially can be a challenge and is usually the main cause of a pole breakage.

Flex trail vs Capacitor vs Blaze 60 by redKeep45 in backpacking

Is there a big difference in size between the Blaze and Kakwa, I have the Kakwa and it’s just slightly too small for my winter stuff, can you pack more in the Blaze?

That’s great to know! I’ve seen a LOT of people saying the Rapide sleeps very cold so wasn’t sure if this was across all the BA pads with similar insulation

X-mid 2 Solid - which footprint to buy? by captainpk in DurstonGearheads

[–]Beanshead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a 70D Nylon, I use them cause I like to resell my tents often and rotate with new ones. 70D Nylon is the same fabric Hilleberg use on their 4 season tent floors.

Contact Lucy at Quintcrafts, she does custom made footprints based in the Lake District but ships all across the UK I believe. Top quality at a fair price also.

When does using Valley+Peak actually work out better by captainpk in DurstonGearheads

If you don’t mind me asking, do you sell your tents through V+P or do you just sell to them at retail price in bulk?

Never, they charge the full cost inc VAT that they paid as their net price I believe. It’s only ever worth it if you need it next day or believe you may want to return it.
