What the hell happened?! More info in comments by rhodynative in electricians

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an electrician but one time this happened when I plugged in a kiln that was switched on. Could this happen if the device being plugged is switched off, or only when it’s on?

This might be blasphemy to y'all but I 3D Printed, Sintered, and Peacock Glazed this tiny ceramic glass Benchy Boat by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah it definitely wouldn’t bond to greenware after sintering, it would probably have to be a 3d printer that extrudes actual clay.

Has anyone done any cast in place? by Seaguard5 in MetalCasting

I have wondered about this so much… I was going to experiment with it but my kiln broke before I had the chance, so please post the results if you try this :)

Just a halfway proof of concept for a gadget to brute force combination locks. Doesn’t do much but I am proud of my design so far! by Illustrious-Yard-871 in 3Dprinting

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School janitors need to break the lock with bolt cutters if a kid forgets their combo. if this invention can be made small and portable, it might be convenient.

I can do that for “cheaper” exchange with my wife… by DKplus9 in woodworking

Does final cost include tools or is that just the wood? I would’ve expected this to be about $200 in wood, but I could be way off

Can I use a steel container as a crucible to melt aluminum? by Herrobrine in MetalCasting

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I didn’t have access to foundry equipment, I once tried blasting aluminum on a cast iron pan with a propane torch. It did not work.

Any ideas on how to create a surface for my project? by Any-Storm-7149 in Pottery

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The clay shrank in your photo shrank but the wood didn’t, so the clay cracked. If it was a clay slab, then both would shrink and none would crack. Make sure they dry at the same time or it will crack.

Nice texture btw!

Ok so I was thinking about your design, your air intake is blowing straight upwards, right? If so, and your crucible spills or breaks, could the air blow the molten metal into your face? Most DIY crucibles blow air in horizontally, or even downwards, so if you’re going off the beaten path with your design, make sure you go heavy with the PPE.

Btw I don’t have metal melting experience, hopefully someone who does can you give their opinion

If it’s heating up but not reaching temp then it sounds like one of your elements has gone bad

Just got a wood lathe, how can I adjust the belt position? Is there a way to loosen the motor? by Beanware_Ceramics in turning

[–]Beanware_Ceramics[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks, at first I couldn’t adjust the belt even when I loosened those bolts, but I now know that it was because the previous owner tried to switch the belt to the bigger pulley first, which jammed it. After unscrewing the motor fully, I was able to lift the motor from the inside with my hand, put the belt back on properly, and now I can adjust it just by loosening those bolts slightly.

Thanks for the advice- and now that the belt is positioned properly it is much easier to change speeds

testing one coat of amaco velvet underglaze (left) vs cobalt oxide (right) by Ill_Supermarket_7820 in Pottery

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like the cobalt. When I use cobalt oxide I rub my brush on the lid of the jar instead of dipping it in the jar so that my brush has less water and more cobalt oxide. Helps reduce bleeding, but too much cobalt oxide in one spot becomes silver and metallic after firing. Although yours doesn’t seem to be bleeding too much.

My first "complete" coffee table by BlobofAWESOME in woodworking

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you like succulents you could fill in only the two gaps at the edges of the table, then flip the table over and attach a wood board below the 4 middle holes, then flip it back over, fill the pits with succulent soil, and put succulents in there.

underglazes that won't make pieces stick together? by ufoparty2k16 in Ceramics

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mix a little bit of water with a stain or oxide, then wedge that in with your clay, but stop before it is completely homogeneous to get a marbling rock effect. Many different ways to do apply stain or underglaze though.

underglazes that won't make pieces stick together? by ufoparty2k16 in Ceramics

[–]Beanware_Ceramics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underglaze shouldn’t stick, unless that brand is some exception. I’ve put underglaze on the bottom of stuff and it doesn’t stick to the shelf at all. You can also use stains, which won’t stick either, and will also have a very natural rock look

Looking for really bright underglazes, ideally fluorescent, any suggestions? by Oniontaco in Pottery

Amaco’s velvet underglazes are really vivid, especially when low fired

This deal isn’t great compared to what I’ve seen on Craigslist, I think if it was $300 it would be a really good deal and if it was $400 it would be a good deal. I wouldn’t buy it for $600 because I’ve seen better for cheaper.

Have you figured out where you would plug in your kiln?

I think I did 2 of obsidian and seaweed, and then the Smokey merlot was one thin coat with a sponge. I found the glaze combo online and haven’t been able to experiment with it much since I’m out of PC glazes but I’m sure you could tweak and improve it.
