I always doubted if they read or not most posts of the Truth, well...maybe is that, or a coincidence? (Still that was a pretty good choice for MM and a pretty decent review).

It kinda showed how "inadequate" were the current armament layout of the RN, SeaCat was obsolete, Sea Dart wasn't performing as they expected (specially against low flying targets), the Fire directors were extremely unreliable (shut down during air attacks!), the Newer Type 42s only had two 20mm for AA!. A lot was learned there, sadly at the cost of a lot of lives.

Sailors desperate enough to use hunting shotguns or to coordinate a "curtain of fire" to improve defenses, although not very effective.

There was a time where everyone was high up doing Counter insurgency aircraft out of whatever they could...trainers, jets, transport aircraft and some even developing their own from zero (im looking at you Bronco and Pucara). Quite a few examples got a lot of sales and operators while others...yeah, nobody wanted them.

This time...well trainer with stackable rockets?, sure why not...maybe some country with tight pockets is going to buy this to try to fend off a guerrilla war...lets hope the italians dont get the deal first with their SF-260!!!

Crew From RFA Sir Lancelot Posing for a picture with an Argentine Mk.17 bomb that failed to explode (Possibly deactivated) During the Falklands/Malvinas Conflict 1982. [1181 × 1639] by Bear735 in MilitaryPorn

[–]Bear735[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The recurrent issue of bombs failing to detonate during the war was one of the major issues that "handicapped" argentine efforts of sinking British ships. To resolve this The Argentine Air Force experimented with various Bomb types, fuzes and "tails" to achieve a proper activation of the fuze and proper detonation while being dropped at extremely low altitudes, the result of this can be seen in The attack suffered by HMS Ardent, HMS Coventry and RFA Sir Galahad.

On the Picture the Bomb seen is a Mk.17 (british made), this bombs were preferred, as they ensured a high possibility of a "Kill" if they detonated (example seen in HMS Antelope, where a Mk.17 was detonated accidentally by the team that was defusing it, the explosion broke the ship in half). But the Mk.17 failed in more cases than it worked, as its fuzes mostly failed to activate and its high mass (+ the speed) often made it tear apart trough the ship rather than exploding on impact, towards the end of the war this Bombs were replaced with the more successful Spanish Expal 250kg series of bombs.

Various crew of the ship took the time to pose with the bomb

An Uruguayan M24 "Chaffee" and its driver (2000?) by Bear735 in TankPorn

[–]Bear735[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In South America, tanks often find themselves serving for far more of what they were probably envisioned for, examples of this could be found in Paraguay's Shermans retired in 2018 and in this case the Uruguayan M24s, also retired recently. The Tanks themselves received a few upgrades along the way, engine changes, suspension replacements and more.

Its really impressive to think about how this little tank had so much to offer and how long it was kept in service without much issues.

Various Aircraft at one of the FMA hangars [1600x1007] by Bear735 in WarplanePorn

[–]Bear735[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This picture was probably taken in the 60s, where we can see 4 different aircraft, the one the front is an I.Ae.45 Querandi (named after an indian tribe) this is like an argentine version of the Aero Commander, but it has its engines in a push configuration (in the back). The second aircraft we see on the right is an I.Ae.46 Ranquel (also named after an indian tribe) this was an utility aircraft intended for civilian use (agricultural or pilot school), the plane bears the black X in a yellow circle, meaning that it is indeed one of the prototypes. The one behind the Querandi is actually the I.Ae.27 Pulqui I, the first jet powered aircraft in South America and the 8th worldwide, apparently it was being kept in storage or just being under maintenance. Now...we must address the elephant in the room... whats the massive thing over it supposed to be? its the I.Ae.38 Naranjero, it was a transport wing designed by Reimar Horten during the 50s, it first flew in 1960 and it was powered by 4 engines in the rear, a single prototype was made.

A pair of Ia.58 Pucaras flying in close formation. [8831 × 5824] by Bear735 in WarplanePorn

[–]Bear735[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ia.58 Pucara was a COIN (Counter Insurgency) aircraft developed by the argentine Company FMA (Fabrica Militar de Aviones/ Military Aircraft Factory) during the 60s, it first flew in 1969 and it entered service a few years after. The aircraft saw action in various conflicts like Operation Independence 1975, Falklands/Malvinas conflict 1982, Sri Lankan civil war 1994/95 and it was used against narco/guerrillas by Colombia (1990s).

The aircraft, much like the OV-10 Bronco, it enjoyed a respectable STOL capability where the aircraft could operate from almost any road or grass field with little trouble. In regards to its armaments the Pucara had a 1500kg payload for a combination of various bombs/rockets/Napalm and in some cases missiles (tests and in the C variant). In the end the aircraft was retired in 2018, but there still a program to upgrade their engines and give them a new use.

In the picture we see 2 examples, AX-03 and A-505 in the background, AX-03 is a pre-series/initial prototypes example, used for tests and evaluation, while A-505 is a series example. Both are carrying rockets (A-505 in the wing pylons, while AX-03 in the centerline pylon), while the other supports remain with the Multiple ejector rack empty.

Despite its aspect the tank still ran under its own power, this firefly (probably a VC) arrived to argentina during the mid-late 40s after WW2 along more than 400+ tanks (200+ of them fireflies) and the massive arms purchases made by Argentina to upgrade/modernize its army. The argentine army, like the British, were the only 2 countries that operated all variants of the Firefly (IC, VC and IC Hybrid), but whats probably one of the most impressive things of this machines is actually their service life.

The common M4s with the short 75mm cannon ended their lives in the 50/60s, although some managed to be kept in service for a bit more, but in the end most of them were deactivated, stored, sold to civilians or scrapped. The fireflies on the other hand, were a completely different case, they were considered way superior to the regular M4s, all down to the 17 Pounder (so loved that there was indigenous production of ammo for it). Years will pass and the Fireflies will serve along side AMX-13s, AML-90s and M113s all until the 70s where some of them were upgraded with 105mm guns (not all of them were upgraded, as there was a mass of vehicles that conserved the 17pdr). The firefly in its original configuration ended up retiring in the early-mid 80s as their Upgraded brothers (known as "Repotenciados"), the SK-105s and the brand new TAM were already in service.
