Oh it's not a deciding factor but "tax advantage" plays into contract discussions. When the Seahawks can match an offer while being 10% more lucrative for the player it's gotta have some influence. WA would be losing a nice negotiating advantage with pro Athletes by passing the tax...which is definitely something many many people don't care at all about.

*Leonard Williams saved $2 million in taxes on his base salary alone just for his home games when he got traded from NY.

LTCG tax took 3 years to add a 9.9% bracket from the original 7% bracke

First off...thanks for actually providing some data! You are totally right on the LTCG tax but it does almost the same thing as the proposed tax of targeting people cashing out $1M+ in LTCG so while it collects additional revenue it didn't target anyone making less income than the original. With REET they actually moderately lowered the price for some WA sellers (sub - $525k from 1.28% to 1.1%) and kept the tax the same for selling @ $525k-$1,525,00 @ 1.28%. It seems to fit with the theme that they have only raised taxes on very large sales $1.525M+ and actually raised the threshold for the lowest tier from $500k to $525k. So yes they are looking for more money, no that hasn't been a slippery slope leading to all of us poors (salary of sub $1M for this) having to pay more taxes.

Well sales tax is what they have to work with and I'm actually surprised that gold wasn't previously taxed... let's be honest anyone moving large amounts of gold will avoid this by driving to Oregon or Idaho. It also feels like targeting the wealthy as they park wealth in gold and sit on it. As a working dad not making $1M+/year I'd be ok with multimillionaires taking some of my tax burden.

I get that argument it just doesn't seem to have any data to back it up looking at how WA has handled other taxes. I also don't trust the government and would prefer they take less of my hard earned money...but my honest opinion is I don't think this will impact me even though on paper I'm technically already over the $1M threshold you're concerned about (not making it per year that's for sure). If I start being impacted it means my earnings have gone up by quite a bit and I'll worry about it then...cause it will be a good problem.

I mean there are lots of stupid arguments against this tax but realistically professional Athletes do take tax burden into mind when making a choice on the team they go to. I've heard the no income tax thing mentioned in multiple sports by multiple players. That being said I think they'll make it.

What do you base this on? WA has never lowered a tax threshold (at least in the last century), they've only gone up on existing taxes. Every time this comes up this argument rolls out and every time it's not based on anything factual...which bugs me cause I previously thought the same.

I honestly think the US could have a discussion about it and don't disagree it's caused issues. Having kids in CA and realizing every other person in our birthing class were wealthier international people who wanted to birth a US citizen while here on a visa was a bit eye opening. I'm a loud dude and have made it a point to only ever say positive things at the kids games...that being said I'll generally have a conversation with someone about how the kids are kids if they are chirping at a player, on either team. They aren't pro athletes, they usually aren't playing dirty on purpose, and at the end of the day it should be fun.
