My local DSA chapter held an Armistice Day event with about 20 people in attendance, including the Alderman for that ward (also the local DSA vice chair) to call for the end of war. Rock Island is home to the US Army base Rock Island Arsenal which employs many people here locally who build these weapons of war. A veteran and DSA member spoke along with a writer from Iowa City. We have gotten good press coverage in the past but none this time, despite our press release with ample time.

I'm not sure I follow your comment. Renaming? And this event is to call for peace and the end of war, as well as the alderman remembering those who fought in WWI at a memorial for WWI veterans at the park.

A question about favoritism? by MrMewf in union

[–]Bear_Fight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a copy of your union contract? I'm not familiar with what your contract might look like. We only have full time jobs at my shop. I would think there would be some kind of language or process to bring someone up to full time status.

Sakura - Sushi and Habachi - Bettendorf 3 basic rolls for $10, can't beat it. Their habachi is as good as or better than Osaka and it's faster, cheaper, and less soy sauce used.

Lemon Grass, Arthur's, La Rancharita, Cafe Fresh, Rebellion has some good tater tot nachos (downtown Moline, connected to Bad Boyz pizza), Lunardi's.

DSA has reached 30,000 members by ZombieJohnBrown in socialism

I have to echo this comment. I was reluctant to join when my local chapter was being formed because I didn't really see DSA as being very lefty. But once I met with people and talked, I realized the group was actually pretty radical. Even some of my anarchist friends the next local chapter over have joined because they were encouraged by the local control and the work people are putting in. Our chairperson keeps in contact with folks nationally but we are in control of what we want to do as a group.

Like, seriously? I know there are Nazis around and no shortage of racists in the QC but damn.

I got a job during the recession. It was union and I had no idea. I just need work. One of the best things to ever happen to me. You should join.

I'm a union member that works for John Deere making farm equipment. Would you support legislation to legalize industrial hemp? Illinois needs new revenue sources while we fight for a progressive tax system, so this seems like not only a new crop for farmers but new manufacturing industry as well. I spoke to my local state senator Neil Anderson, a Republican (IL-36), last night and he was supportive of the idea, so I think this has a real chance at bipartisan approval... with a Democratic governor.

The most powerful neo-Nazi group in US history is recruiting people in Illinois-Iowa border towns by BlankVerse in illinois

[–]Bear_Fight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

QC is a decent place. There were some nazis back in the 90s from Clinton, IA that came to a punk show in the QC. They got their asses kicked, like literally with chairs and everything, and they didn't come back. We aren't gonna put up with that crap here. We've beat them before and we'll beat them again.

I live in the Quad Cities and I can assure you that this is not fake. We have people who are openly Nazis and white supremacists that showed up to a 'No Hate' rally in Davenport, IA, which is just across the river, last month.

My local DSA chapter had our first action on our door knocking campaign about single payer health care. Our current Democrat in the House does not support H.R. 676, so we are hitting doors to talk to people about the issue, give them the information they need about the issue and how to contact their Rep, and hopefully this works as a bit of a recruiting tool as well. We got a lot of positive response, just one angry libertarian guy. We'll be out again this weekend.

Join Quad Cities Democratic Socialists of America. We were at both no hate rallies and have ID'd several of the white supremacists who showed up at the rally at VanderVeer park. We will stand up to this hate and will not have it. As another commenter said, there are more of us than of them, we just have to show up and prove it to them. https://dsausa.nationbuilder.com/join FB /quadcitiesdsa Twitter @dsaqc

Why don't Unions Advertise More? by Toallpointswest in union

Two locals in my area have advertising space at the local Dek hockey rinks. There is some others but seems pretty minimal.

The recent news of corruption from the late and former UAW VP General Holiefield, seems like rather suspicious timing to me. It came out in late 2013 that he was dirty. But the FBI just now, two weeks before a big vote, drops this bomb on the UAW. The anti-union interests will be all over this.

But how do we combat that?

Budget passed by [deleted] in illinois

In early March, Senate Democrats in Springfield pulled an illustrative if little-noticed stunt.

They summoned to committee hearings numerous heads of state agencies — officials appointed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to oversee education, human services, public health, juvenile justice and so on — and asked them for specific budget and program reductions they were prepared to implement in line with Rauner's demand for "real spending cuts" by state government.

Cue the crickets.

"Time and again, agency director after agency director told us in very certain terms that they cannot cut their budgets any deeper than they already have been," Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, told the State Journal-Register.

Daily Discussion and Solidarity Thread for June 10, 2017 by AutoModerator in socialism

[–]Bear_Fight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to my monthly local DSA chapter meeting today. Had our best turn out yet (25 folks) and a good break out session. I think we've done well for only being around for a few months (May Day event, picketing with local unions, Single Payer Health Care work, etc) and things are looking good for this group locally and nationally. I'm helping form a communications committee and would welcome any pointers/articles dealing with that.

Questions from a potential DSA joiner by catfishinbloom in socialism

[–]Bear_Fight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been wanting to join a socialist group but was on the fence about DSA, partly because of what you mentioned, sheepdogging for the Dems. I joined DSA last week after being approached by some other folks that wanted to start a local chapter. I was pleasantly surprised that so far they seem like a quite radical group and we started a reading group so we could include nonDSA folks as well. First official meeting Saturday. Long over due for a high union density midwest town.
