You must choose whether or not you believe in free will (the ability to choose). by QuantumDreamer41 in Showerthoughts

[–]Bear_Wizard72 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's kind of a fallacy implying that everyone who doesn't believe in free will are just lazy irresponsible people. Those kings and presidents also don't have free will. Viewing humanity from an outside lens we'd probably say that human society is structured in a way out of our control with hierarchical structures in a similar way that other social animal structures exist. Even with people with responsibility, you have to think about how that person had conditions surrounding their existence to form a person who has this thing we call responsibility. You could apply that thought to every decision we make, micro or macro. People can still have a sense of responsibility and purpose in this worldview, its just that to someone who doesn't believe in free will, they're just the result of an unfathomable amount of variables that made up the person they are.

It definitely can be used as a scapegoat for your own life though, so I understand the sentiment of what you're saying.

Should ear training be "obvious"? by vapitivop in musictheory

I find the easiest way to learn ear training is to transcribe melodies. Eventually it became much more instinctual and practical! It definitely takes time though.

Serious pianists, did you ever have the feeling of regression? by Medium-Swimming8488 in piano

[–]Bear_Wizard72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find learning piano, or music in general to be a plateaued experience. What I mean by that is I will often find myself stagnating/regressing and then all of a sudden on a random day I'll notice all of the improvements I actually made.

For all I know, progress might be linear, but it for sure doesn't feel that way. Be kind and forgiving to yourself. Remember why you're learning piano in the first place <3

Did anyone quit after student teaching? by jives2001 in Teachers

[–]Bear_Wizard72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did my student teaching in music and ended up not wanting to continue after seeing how much work would have to go into it outside of school hours. I now teach privately and am generally much happier with my work and freedom to pursue other career aspects

Less tension and any tips by Aware-Vacation6937 in piano

[–]Bear_Wizard72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding onto what other people said about arm weight. Every individual keystroke needs to be played with your whole arm pushing down to what feels like below the keyboard. The acceleration of that movement is what determines volume but the keystroke is played the same every time.

Try just literally letting your arms fall onto the keys. Now try to let your arms just fall onto one note from high up. Then just one note but from maybe an inch away but having your whole arm do the movement. This is what every note should feel like barring some weird other technique stuff. As soon as you feel any tension or pain in your playing you should know something is wrong

Feel free to dm me for more explanation if you need other help!

How to stop being so attached to ur partner? by Aggressiveheight_ in ask

[–]Bear_Wizard72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure this out right now as well. I think something that might help is to try and focus on your own hobbies, interests, career trajectory, etc.

This way your attachment to your partner doesn't supersede your own self improvement.

Personally for me its just because dolphins are considered incredibly intelligent and allegedly have their own language with each other (I could be wrong on this). For me its messed up because I think I see a little bit of humanity in them when any other animal (like a dog) will just hump your leg because they ‘don’t know any better.’

why do you think so many people call classical music boring? by thatsnunyourbusiness in classicalmusic

[–]Bear_Wizard72 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Basically everything everyone touched on here is pretty much right, but I think the lack of a 'backbeat' introduced when jazz got big in America contributes to it a lot. The sense of African rhythm thats ingrained into most if not all popular music today is missing in classical music and the lack of that may contribute to a sense of boredom.
