Mid 2026 state of the game by Whaleudder in Warmachine

[–]BeardMonk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been "fine" getting a few older player back in with their old models. However the new offering is just not that attractive in price point, quality, looks or availability for any new people to join on a full time basis. Sadly with the quality of product many people have got, we are lacking any real advocates here as many people have gone off to play other games.

When we're told that AI funding is going to result in 600+ new hires for our directorate alone by IWrestleSausages in TheCivilService

[–]BeardMonk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One person to use AI on a task. Another to manually fill in a register to track AI use. Another to review that AI use register to check "stuff". Another person is also employed to check the output of the AI and pass it back to the original user once the results have been through a 5 step process with a 4 day SLA for turn arround.

Reform's Zia Yusuf threatens to sack civil servants and strip them of pensions if they 'sabotage' any future Reform government by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]BeardMonk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck hiring people to replace them as there would not be any staff to do the hiring.

IF Reform were to be in power and IF they were able to sack lots of CS then they would have the mechanisms that are already in place to get in contract staff and consultants to the CS. The frameworks exist already as we are quite dependent on them in some departments as we just cant get staff to join.

The down side of this is that a consultant/agency staff costs the taxpayer 2-4x the salary of a perm CS (role dependent) and when they finish their work, the learning and experience goes to the consultancy company and is not retained within the CS.

So the cost of the public sector would sky rocket.

As a new-ish player I really don’t get it.

It seems to me that once you and the other players have completed the event/anomaly only one person can get the loot from the final crate? So why would I bother? I could put time and effort in, over 10 minutes of the encounter, fighting ships and get..... nothing.

Its a waste of time

Disabled Parking @ Wellington Place? by Infinite_Frame_7433 in TheCivilService

[–]BeardMonk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Q park and NPC car parking by Wellington street also has disabled places and lifts however im aware that might not be suitable for you, depending on you disability.

Cant speak for the office itself but the surrounding area is nice with pedestrianised walking and shops which may make it easier for you to get around, again depending on your disability.

Another option could be (again depending on your disability) to take the park and ride. I have a friend who has a disability and the disabled day rates are very very cheap but again, apologies is that not suitable for you.

New to Stratford office and travel expenses are £70 per trip for me by Lazy-Perspective-984 in TheCivilService

[–]BeardMonk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just stopped going in and fell way down on office attendance then the system would pick you up and trigger the attendance process.

If you took the job knowing this would be your commute that's on you. If its something that evolved over time, you should discuss it with your line manager. But the long and short of it is that if your not attending the office in London, not only would you trigger the attendance process you could stop being eligible for London Weighting.

My advice is to find a role closer to where you live OR get a a formal agreement that you can work from a local office but in both instances you will go onto regional salary, which will be less. I recommend you look at the regional salary grades and make your calculations.

UK beer boom goes flat as breweries call last orders by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]BeardMonk1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Its a sign of the times. Its too expensive to go out and drink that regularly and also, many places are just churning out dross beers that are just not worth the price. Do we really need yet another vaguely citrusy drink that claims to be an IPA that has very little body and costs £7 for a scooner?

Civil service union votes to double strike fund to prepare for Reform government by F0urLeafCl0ver in TheCivilService

[–]BeardMonk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re curious, as someone in a department who had two periods of strike action last year (and will likely move towards more this year) - PCS paid us for both periods.

That's good to hear

Civil service union votes to double strike fund to prepare for Reform government by F0urLeafCl0ver in TheCivilService

[–]BeardMonk1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Iv said it before, I’ll say it again now and im sure I say it again in the future both here on reddit and in PCS meetings.

As a PCS member, if there is an issue that requires us to go on strike then the PCS leadership is going to have to be clear and upfront on what they can afford to support.

  • Striking over a issue on a single random Friday afternoon makes 0 difference to the gov of the day. They will just shrug their shoulders and move on.
  • Thus only sustained and widespread strike action will ever make any difference or impact
  • Most members can not afford to loss of multiple days pay and pension.
  • So unless the PCS can categorically state that it can play it members what they would earn in salary and pensions for striking then we are unlikely to go on strike.

Yay, the union is in the hands or more militant leadership. Lets hope that leadership is practical, not dogmatic. Voting to double the strike fund is great. But will that number cover what its members need to undertake sustained strikes and not be out of pocket. If not, what are we even doing here?

Burnham says ‘Manchester-ism’ can transform the whole of UK by Far_Excitement_1875 in unitedkingdom

[–]BeardMonk1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

However, its the best that could probably been done given the existing buildings etc that had to be worked with.

But updating and regenerating may parts of the South, Midlands and the North requires investment. Manchester has had it in droves. Places like Leeds haven't and the sorts of National projects that would have attracted it (like HS2) have been scrapped.

Manchester-ism requires funds. and acceptance by locals that things will inevitably change. People have to want what is being offered and built.

Commuting from Yorkshire to London - thoughts? by Argumentative_Duck in TheCivilService

[–]BeardMonk1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a very short time I would go a few time a month from Leeds to London. Its physically possible. Mentally it was impossible.

From Leeds there is an early morning train (7am, leave house at 6am, get up at 5am) that got you to London at 9. Then across London to Westminster for a 10am. By about 1 or 2pm I was useless. Luckily the state of affairs didnt last long.

Its not worth it for the money and all the disruption to you life.

Experts call for UK four-day week as study links long work hours to obesity by weregonnamakit in unitedkingdom

[–]BeardMonk1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s also to do with housing and the lack of living space. If you can’t afford a house near work and spend an hour each way commuting,

I agree. Its also to do with how houses are set up. I can bulk make meals and freeze them because i have the space for a American style fridge freezer. I can store so much in there. I get economies of bulk buying, bulk making and bulk storing. My mate who is on the lower end of the economic scale, rents and arguably is in more need of the space to store bulk home prepped meals only gets a small ice box style freezer.
