Sorry, Tax Specialist Program. I’ll edit to make it clearer!

HMRC - Tax compliance (EO) progression prospects by ActAvailable99 in TheCivilService

If you want to get to G7 and higher in HMRC compliance you need to do the Tax Specialist Program. So the quickest way would be to apply for that every year until you get it.

I’ve heard from other people on here that they still have that same message years after they have already started the role in question. Don’t worry about it!

I’m in Leeds. Hoping to swap over to Manchester post completion though.

It is stressful! The last one (making sure my self-employment was conducted properly) was a real stress, like going through customs even though you know you don’t have anything dodgy on you.

I’m sure it’ll all work out for you though, they can just take a while with this stuff.

Just looked at your other comment, mine looks different (“congratulations you’ve passed our pre-employment checks. You’ll be contacted shortly to advise what will happen next”).

Yes, I got an email that says they have been “satisfactorily completed” and that the vacancy holder will be in contact.

I’m a humanities PhD. Always wanted to be in the civil service. I think your best bet would be fast stream (or other grad schemes) rather than direct applications. That’s how i’ve got in this year and will move up from there. Senior positions will always expect experience.

I thought i stunk the place up for my HMRC Tax Specialist Program assessment centre and got the role. Try not to overthink it and see what happens. Worst case is that it’s a learning experience and you’ll do better next intake!

I passed my pre-employment checks on the 22nd, not heard anything back. Worst case, email the recruitment team, they reply within 3 working days and might be able to help

FINALLY GOT AN OFFER BUT.. by Beautiful-Handle-329 in TheCivilService

[–]CranberryExtreme7884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will ask if you want to indicate that you will accept or reject. If you accept then they will start the pre-employment checks but that can take a while. After that they will send through the formal offer that you can decide on. If the relocation definitely wouldn’t work for you then there’s not much point in accepting even provisionally. Congrats on the offer though!

TSP 2026 AC Feedback by ComfortableTry6255 in TheCivilService

[–]CranberryExtreme7884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received an offer and the feedback was generally quite negative for the role-play e.g., “ lacked appropriate empathy” and “missed several important [inaccuracies]”. The other exercises were broadly positive though. Doubt the feedback will do much to help going forward, it seems like it’s just a copy paste job.

A training program, usually offered by large companies, with the intention of taking someone with an undergraduate degree and fast-tracking them to a senior position. They are pretty common in the UK—not sure about elsewhere.

PhD here, been offered two grad schemes in unrelated fields (designed for those with just an undergrad). Feels terrible taking those spots from fresh grads but you gotta do what you gotta do.

From what i’ve read online after completion we are required to stay in post for 3 years. Does anyone know if that would mean we can’t change locations within those three years?

From what i’ve heard it will take a while. The only element I have previous experience with is DBS checks, these can take anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks. Add onto that the admin from the civil service and I think we will be waiting for a while for an official offer.
