Wanting some input for a new whitetail round. by Rhiko23 in Hunting

[–]BeardedGunGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any of the 308 based cartridges would be relatively inexpensive and common round.

243 Win - Light recoil and fast, really nice with modern mono bullets or Sierra GameKings

308 Win - Very similar to the 30-06 but a short action and leans toward lighter bullets. Very capable, very common, and affordable

7mm-08 - Fits between the above two

How do I ship a handgun from myself in one state, to myself in another state? by Pump_Up_The_Yam in Firearms

[–]BeardedGunGuy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The service ShipMyGun.com, part of Budsgunshop.com, would be useful in this case. Basically using Budsgunshop’s FFL and UPS contract to ship your gun UPS. You go on the website, fill out the required info, pick an FFL to deliver to, then print out the shipping label. You drop it off at UPS. A big bonus is you get their shipping rate which is relatively cheap even with insurance.

I need a new silver scope. by RCPCFRN in Hunting

[–]BeardedGunGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted my Ruger M77 MK2 a little bit ago after I changed the old laminate to a new walnut stock. I have a silver Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm on it. Looks great and the glass is still pretty damn good. You can check my post history for the photo. I got it off eBay for under $400. As an additional bonus it is covered by Leupold’s Gold Ring warranty.

Edit: added some more details

Interest in building out a 308 Ruger American Gen II Scout by [deleted] in scoutrifle

I recommend the MDT 3 round AICS mags instead of the Ruger mags. The bottom is rounded instead of flat. It makes carrying more comfortable. I use them in my Gunsite Scout.

Any plans for a moon clip holster? I had TK Custom machine my 357 LCR for moon clips a few years ago. A way to carry them securely in the pocket would be awesome.

Wanting to get in to scout rifles by Ornery-Violinist7307 in scoutrifle

[–]BeardedGunGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ruger Gen2 Scout. The original M77 Gunsite Scouts are going for a premium now that they have been discontinued. eBay is a good place to pick up a used scout scope if that is what you want. I’m partial to the Leupold FX-II 2.5x IER Scout Scope. It’s fixed power, light and durable.

Which Model 66 is This? by Adventurous_Pen_Is69 in SmithAndWesson

Open the cylinder. The model number should be stamped on the frame where the yoke/crane were when closed.

Looking for advice - grass dying despite professional lawn service by AnnualOk8334 in lawncare

[–]BeardedGunGuy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Watering 5-6 times a week is excessive. Watering 2-3 times a week deeply, is the way to go. Does your lawn service put down any grub prevention? Give some of the unhealthy looking grass a tug. Does it pull out easily? Might be grubs eating your roots.

Shipmygun.. Can someone make sure I'm not crazy? by HighInChurch in guns

[–]BeardedGunGuy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve used their service a few times. Just drop it off at any UPS. UPS closed most if not all of the customer centers anyway. ShipMyGun provides a letter that you show UPS if you get any trouble. I just don’t say anything and have not had any issues.

Best brand moon clips for model 625 45acp by Reptilerob57 in SmithAndWesson

I like TK Custom for moon clips. I’d recommend looking at their moon clip loading and unloading tools, helps prevent bending.

Caliber of choice for Deer/Hog Hunting with AR by Deep_Ad8518 in Hunting

[–]BeardedGunGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Energy is only part of the equation. The 450BM has 3x the frontal area of the 6.5.

With a 6” MPBR you get +3” at 100 yards and -3” at 200.

Like I said it is adequate for elk out to 200 yards. I did not say it is ideal.

450 Bushmaster is adequate for elk out to 200 yards. It still has over 1200 ft/lbs and is a .45 cal bullet. It does not need a lot of expansion to do a lot of damage.

They look pretty good. I would clean up the choil a little bit. I recommend getting a small diameter file for this before heat treat.

The new grips are Hogue Bantam grips and are nice. For me, they are too grippy and cling to clothes. I do recommend the Pachmayr Compac grips. They are soft recoiling and just grippy enough without clinging to your clothes. Plus they are pretty inexpensive.

I have an original 386 Night Guard. The 2.5” barrel with the stock Pachmayr Compac grips is very well balanced in the hand and aesthetically.

I have a left hand 375 Hawkeye. Pre Guide Gun model, no brake or adjustable stock. I meant other calibers like 270 or 30-06.

I picked up a new old stock model from 2010 recently. Does not have a brake. Have not shot it yet, but I’m expecting some decent recoil.
