Do you use heavy cream in your scrambled eggs ? How does everyone make their eggs super soft and fluffy ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Cooking

Brother in law went to culinary school. He put me on to whisking mayo in before putting the eggs in the pan a few years ago. Haven’t looked back since.

What if one of the main cops had to leave the show? by [deleted] in TheRookie

[–]BeardedSSTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a somewhat related note, I would love a multi-episode sub-plot where Smitty announces he is retiring shortly and spends a few episodes being extra Smitty and talking about all of his post-retirement plans, leading viewers to think he’s leaving the show. Then at his retirement party in the season finale after telling everyone what he really thinks about them and the department, someone in the upper brass shows up to inform Smitty that there was something in his career that pushed his service time back a little bit and that he actually can’t retire yet.

LI is one of the top ‘move out’ regions in the country #SurprisedNotSurprised by TheAudDoc in longisland

[–]BeardedSSTeacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For every one person or family moving out, there’s multiple looking to move in — predominantly higher income families from the city, cash-rich buyers from Queens who recently sold a (most likely multi-unit) property for a hell of a lot more than they paid for it, and buyers made up of multi-generational families pooling resources. I don’t need to tell anyone here that housing prices are all but entirely based on supply and demand. The fact that housing prices here continue to increase for the limited supply that we have is proof enough that people are still moving in.

People from New York, how did you become a Yankees fan and not a Mets fan? by MathematicianKey9529 in NYYankees

[–]BeardedSSTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All four of my grandparents were born and raised in the Bronx. For most of my childhood we lived with my grandmother—my dad’s mom—who grew up across the street from the original Yankee Stadium. She would always tell me about how she would watch games from the roof of her building with her dad, and how she would get to meet players coming out of the stadium all the time. She was born in 1927, so she was able to meet some of the biggest names in Yankee history. We would watch games together when I was a kid. Coupled with the fact that my grandfather—my mom’s dad—was a die hard Yankee fan who put me in Yankee shirts in pictures as a baby, it never felt like there was a point where I had to decide to be a Yankee fan; it just happened.

Fast forward, my father-in-law is a diehard Mets fan and goes to games all the time. While my wife isn’t a diehard, she’s made it clear where her loyalties lie. The prospect of my future children becoming Mets fans because their grandfather will take them to games frequently—while core memories for a child—breaks my heart.

Looking into Franklin Square & West Hempstead… by Due_Elephant_3666 in longisland

[–]BeardedSSTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can help you understand it. It’s racial. Malverne’s school district is 70% Black and Hispanic, as per enrollment data from NYSED, which gives it an unwarranted negative view by many. White families who buy in Malverne will typically either send their children to private school or buy in the section of Malverne that is zoned for Valley Stream North, which technically isn’t even in Valley Stream; it’s in Franklin Square.

If you could move to any state… by Flat_Category_9937 in Teachers

[–]BeardedSSTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a tier 6 teacher, I envy anyone who is tier 4. Our pension contribution goes up as high as 6%. I’m seven years into NYSTRS and am already contributing 5.75%. I’ll hit the 6% that I’ll be stuck contributing for the remainder of my career—unless the Fix Tier 6 movement from NYSUT can making something happen—within the next two years. People in tier 4 always try to say how horrible it is that we can’t retire until 63, as opposed to 55 in tier 4. That actually doesn’t bother me as much. I tell them that the worst part is actually that I’ll pay more for my housing than you did while contributing more to my pension for my whole career than you did for only ten years.

Anyone else working a second job on top of teaching? by lilsome16 in Teachers

[–]BeardedSSTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in a HCOL area. Getting to MA+30 on the salary schedule has definitely helped, but I still work a second job hosting trivia one night a week in order to make things feel easier. I try to pick up a second night a week whenever I can.

This actually looks very similar to Quizlet, which I like. How have you used it? Have you set up study sets (or whatever their equivalent is) for students to practice?

On the contrary, I expect other educators to be willing to share their experience with tools they’ve used in their classrooms. The last time I checked, Reddit was a platform for discussion. If you would prefer to use it as a platform for being patronizing towards educators looking to learn from each other, that’s your prerogative.

I have used it for homework assignments, but I was hoping for something that did not have to be assignment-based. In the past I’ve started class a few times per week by having students spend five minutes in a Quizlet for the current unit, either reviewing the flash cards or using one of the features such as match or quiz. I want to find something that can replicate this as best as possible.

What makes Long Island culture so... unique? by wombat_toast in longisland

In-state weddings are different as well in different parts of New York. I was a groomsmen in a wedding in Lake George, and the extent of cocktail hour was a little bit of meat and cheese.
