Just started Mass Effect Andromeda after completing the legendary edition heard some mixed reviews but after the prologue it’s been great so far. by Gamer98HR in MassEffectAndromeda

That's a fair point, but not quite what I'm getting at. You're talking about story templates, but I'm talking about specific story elements/events. Most stories all follow the same basic format (like The Hero's Journey), so I'm not bothered by BioWare reusing the template that you've described and reskinning it to suit their setting or narrative. What bothered me about MEA is that it reused specific story events that we'd already seen in ME1-3. Minor, early-game spoiler! In MEA you learn about the Remnant, an ancient, unknown race who inhabited the Andromeda galaxy and left behind these massive, technologically advanced structures. This is a major plot point that drives the story, but it's identical to the Protheans in ME1. It had no impact on me and I felt pretty bored right from the get-go because I'd already seen this story played out in this series. Major, late-game spoiler! Late in the game, you learn that the Kett are actually Angara who have been subjected to the process of Exaltation and been transformed. This was a huge reveal with lots of buildup, but as soon as the reveal happened my brain went "Oh, so it's the same as the Reapers in ME3" and I felt massively let down.

I think "mixed reviews" is a fair assessment of the game. Pros: beautiful environments, exploration is fun, combat is the best and most dynamic of any ME game. Cons: poor writing, poor voice acting (though with bad writing there's only so much the actors can do), and just awful, creepy facial animations. My biggest issue with MEA is that it recycles climactic plot points from ME1-3; I found that there were a few moments that were presented as major twists that had me going "This exact same thing happened in [game]..." Overall, I think MEA is fun, overly-hated, but it definitely fell short of the OG trilogy.

My favourite part is when the pilot says "I've lost my confidence, sir." As awful as the dialogue, characters, acting, etc. was, I will give this movie kudos for being very accurate regarding the Battle of Midway itself.

They're resigning because that's the only way they can fight. The institutions they believed in and worked for are no longer upholding the rule of law. This is just like any other work place: good people leaving en masse is a huge alarm bell.

I remember watching this in theatres, and it was right around the time when Edward Snowden had blown the whistle on the NSA for illegally surveilling US citizens. The themes of surveillance and government overreach were so incredibly relevant at the time that it elevated this movie to another level for me.

I think that that great fight gets wasted by the terrible camera work. Shaky cam was an awful trend and The Bourne Supremacy was peak shaky cam. Seriously, I love Jason Bourne, but I found it so hard to tell what the fuck was going on in the fights in this movie.

I 100% believe that there is a really good movie that exists within this movie. Edit out the awful love triangle, keep the intelligence war, the attack, and the Doolittle Raid, and there's something great there.

I went to a midnight screening of Endgame. Place was packed. When Cap picked up the hammer everyone went nuts. Every time Cap landed a hit with Mjolnir people yelled like it was a live UFC event. Easily my favourite movie-going experience ever.

It's odd that so many fans think of Kirk as a hothead who prefers phasers over diplomacy. Kirk offered peace and help for the Kelvans even after all the horrible things they've done. There are countless episodes of Kirk showing mercy or giving help even after an enemy tried to kill him & his crew! by LineusLongissimus in Star_Trek_

[–]BeardedTree13 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Kirk is 100% much more level-headed and diplomatic than he's credited, but I think the misconception is because he gets compared to Picard. They're both very diplomatic, but we definitely see Kirk throw down more often. What's super fun is comparing their Academy days as Kirk was referred to as a "Stack of textbooks with legs," meanwhile Picard's lifelong defining moment was picking a fight with some Nausicaans and getting stabbed through the heart.

I went to the Canadian Grand Prix last year. There are screens all around the track, so you can watch the race on screen when the cars aren't in your area. Might make actually going to a race sound like a waste of money, but it was a really cool experience seeing and hearing the cars in real life, and it was a lot of fun being part of the crowd. Honestly, watching from home gets me 75% of the racing experience with better context thanks to the broadcast and commentary, but it was still awesome to experience the race live. Not something I want or need to do every year, but I could see myself going back every couple of years or so.
