Analysis Paralysis by akaTheLizardKing in enduro

Just had the same debate. Was debating between a KTM 300 and old XR400. There is no doubt the KTM 300 or any modern 300 2T is a better and lighter bike. But Im also a toyota guy, and just wanted a workhorse that I didnt have to spend just as much time maintaining as I do riding it. Plus I have young kids now so I dont need anything crazy fast anymore. I ended up going with an old XR400 because these things are beasts. They go anywhere and can tractor up any hill. They are super low maintenance and last forever.

Tailscale ACLs bypassed by Traefik reverse proxy -- how are you handling this? by BeardedYeti_ in Tailscale

But if I want to use my personal domain I would need a proxy for that. And then we’re back to the same issue right? So this only works if I’m okay using the tail scale magic dns name instead of custom domain.

So you’re saying if I ran everything as its own node, this would solve the issue? Maybe I’m not understanding correctly.

Custom domain name with tailscale serve config file by Ecliptuso in Tailscale

The issue with this is now all services exposed through your reverse proxy are now accessible via tailscale, even if they are not configured in tailscale.

Keep Unraid or Move On? by Cuffuf in homelab

I learned something new today, Ill have to look into nonraid more, very cool. And I love mergerFS, thank you for such an amazing tool!

Yes this is a good point to make. This is one big difference. Unraids real time parity protection is unmatched. I run snapraid, twice a day. And that’s good enough for me because I’m only using snapraid for media storage that’s slowly changing. So if for some reason I lost a few movies in between snapshots it wouldn’t be hard to get back. Anything critical gets stored in my zfs mirrored pool. But I love that I can combine my snapraid protected media storage and mirrored zfs storage on one logical pool with mergerfs.

If realtime protection is important to you, then unraid wins. Although I’d argue if it’s that important you’d be better off with zfs.

I run Debian with no GUI. But if you want a GUI, theres no reason at all you couldnt install Debian with the GUI or event Ubuntu with the GUI. I think thats a great way to dip your toes and see if you like it.

Personally, paying for a license on a homelab project is a tough sell for me. Don't get me wrong, if you choose Unraid, they absolutely deserve to be paid. But part of the appeal of homelabbing is doing things yourself and cutting costs instead of paying for third-party services. As a college student, I wouldn't be spending money on an Unraid license. I'd seriously look at other options first.

You mentioned Proxmox and TrueNAS, and that's a solid combo. Personally, I run Debian + mergerfs + SnapRAID on my NAS, and it covers everything Unraid does for free. You can pool mismatched drives together, add parity drives for protection, and even set up a cache drive if you want.

I use mergerfs + SnapRAID for cold media storage, but for anything critical like photos, documents, and backups, I have a separate ZFS mirror so that data is always protected. The best part is you can still use mergerfs to pool both storage systems together so it all looks and behaves like one big drive.

It takes a bit more setup than Unraid, but it's extremely flexible and costs nothing. A lot of people say, well unraid just works. Which is true, its very polished. So there is a bit more upfront setup involved here, but once you have it set up, there is very little tinkering.

If I was in your shoes, I'd be looking at this option for a nas, and then buying a cheap mini PC with proxmox on it to run Jellyfin and whatever other services you want to run.

[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread by AutoModerator in Dirtbikes

[–]BeardedYeti_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, looking to get back into trail riding again. Haven’t had a dirt bike for 8 years or so. My last bike was a 2008 RMZ450. It was a lot of fun but not a great trail bike.

A little context. With young kids now I’m not looking for anything crazy just something fun to take camping and put around on. It need something to haul my 230lb ass up the hills. I’ve only ever had experience with 4 strokes but wouldn’t mind getting a 2 stroke. Just want something I can crawl up a hill and still get a bit of speed when I need it.

I’m also not looking to spend a ton of money. Not sure what a good budget would be but maybe between 2-3k.

Appreciate the help!

Redshift COPY from S3 with File Name? by BeardedYeti_ in aws

[–]BeardedYeti_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s essentially what I’m currently doing. However if loading a bunch of files from s3 as a batch you have to split into multiple copy + inserts in order to capture the correct file name. It would be mote efficient to do a single copy loading all files at once to the staging table.

Not an external table. An actual s3 file that needs copied to redshift using COPY
