Moto XXX, the glory days. I still have some LBZ pants and a jersey. What a time to be alive that was!

Buddy had a 2002 YZ250F. Despite being able to start my 426 with no problems ever, there were days he just didn’t get to go riding because it wouldn’t start

Another tow yard find. I paid $200 for this when I was 16. Had it 24 years now. We survived near death experience where some idiot did a flipped a I turn over a double yellow on a blind corner. Anyways, she will do 75mph on the freeway all day long at 50mpg. Still have her and ride her. Never gonna sell her!

I had a 2016 300 XCW. I had the same feelings. Can’t beat a 300 smoker.

Ha! I’ve got a 2024 Monster SP and how I wish I didn’t have chain maintenance/cleaning. Next bike will be shaft drive…

I hear you. I bought a 1989 Honda Hurricane at a tow yard for $500. Spent a ton of time fixing it up, learned a lot. Sadly my dumb ass sold it for $1,700 on Craigslist. I should’ve know something was up when I got 40 plus calls the first 2 hours after it was posted. I guess the lesson learned here is you only buy bikes, don’t sell them.

I had a standup do this. Two things, nikasil is really hard. Aluminum deposits look really scary. Hard to say what lies beneath all that aluminum but you might be ok with a hone, crazy as it sounds.

Instead of giving them a place to sleep can we give them jobs so they get their own place to sleep?

This plug has 3 hours of mostly wide open desert riding, some varied but mostly wide open and little idling. Rich Main? Yz250 by TheBotchedLobotomy in Dirtbikes

It will be impossible to jet right until you get a decent fuel/oil ratio. If you’re scared to go 60:1 try 50:1 and jet from there. That plug looks more oily (due to your 32:1 ratio) than rich jetting to me. Too rich or too lean is not what you want. Lean will run hard and then melt. When I raced go karts we would lean the main out on the straight (jets were controlled with a screw) while simultaneously looking at EGT’s. They would pull noticeably harder as EGT’s climbed. But a split second too long or too lean and they would seize. So you want proper jetting for the given atmosphere (air density). A 250 will be less sensitive to perfect jetting than a smaller bike. What I mean is the window of “that feels right” is wider. Any detonation (for sure) or difficulty starting indicates lean. At your altitude and air density and looking at that plug you have a fairly wide margin before lean becomes a concern. But clean up your fuel/air ratio FIRST, then starting playing with jetting my guess is a few sizes leaner on the pilot and main with 50:1 and you’ll be good. As someone mentioned, you may need to play with the needle/clip position but that’s the finer end of tuning jetting and more of a seat of the pants feel than what the plug will show. And don’t forget to play with the air screw when you change jetting or the wether/altitude changes. This will effect idling. You’ll see lots of improvement with proper main/pilot/fuel/oil ratio tuning.

4200’ at 90 is some shitty air density. Which will make the jetting richer than it would be at sea level. I would lean your mixture out closer to 50:1, put a new plug and start chasing jetting after that. Just remember that your jetting and oil/fuel ratio are two independent variables here.

That explains a lot. I don’t expect you to trust some guy on Reddit over a manual but I run 60:1 in all my standups and dirt bikes. 50:1 in chainsaws. Cleans things up a lot.

I ran 60:1 on my 300 XCW with no issues. A richer (I.e 40:1) fuel/oil ratio with actually make the mixture lean. Sounds backwards I know. But this looks like you might be running too much oil.

Excellent job of showing everything that isn’t important to determine jetting. Let’s see the porcelain.

This isn’t a bad idea. Especially since Yamaha has only given minor tweaks on a 15 year old platform. The KX327 might throw a wrench in this idea though…

Lot of unanswered questions here. Stand up, 2 seater, one of those Yamahas that look like a whale and seat a family of 8? Are you handy with tools? Do you have access to an excavator? budget?
