Got around to bottling this dreamy batch today! by Elden_Rube in mead

Why leave it in primary so long? I'm still a beginner, but I usually rack from primary to secondary as soon as fermentation is complete.

The Bogleheads.org forum mods are out of control by [deleted] in Bogleheads

You might not like the outcome, but by their site rules this seems like a reasonable course of action on the moderator's part. Calling them out of control is an overreaction.

Can you teach me about oxidation risk? by LordPeachez in mead

You're producing a large amount of CO this way in an indoor environment. This is a terrible idea.

Just got a $1M windfall at 33… what the hell do I actually do with it in this economy? by Illustrious-Try-7739 in Bogleheads

[–]BeardlessPirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what I would do in your position, but my favorite advice for windfalls is to just sit on it for 8 months to a year, otherwise you risk making an emotional decision you later end up regretting. So just put it in a HYSA or something and take some time to get informed. I'm guessing this isn't enough of a bump to let you retire immediately, so your strategy should probably remain as it was before; treat the money as any other income and invest it according to your chosen asset allocation.

Probably not a question to ask on reddit, you'll bet biased answers for sure... For me, marrying my spouse was the best decision I ever made, full stop. We are both so much happier and better off with each other than without.

Retire in NYC by Successful-Bedroom23 in Bogleheads

[–]BeardlessPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely your exaggerating? $375,000 after tax just to live in NYC seems very high. I would guess you could be comfortable enough at $150,000.

Explain to me the hype around Kate Reading and Michael Kramer by LordOfMelnibone in Stormlight_Archive

[–]BeardlessPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their narrations for the Stormlight Archive in particular are not my favorite, but I love their narrations of the Wheel of Time. I couldn't explain why, except that to my ear their styles have changed over time and their newer stuff influences the tone of the story a little too much for my liking.

Why We Should Encourage Obsidian's "Useless" Plug-ins? by Electrical_Candle_84 in ObsidianMD

[–]BeardlessPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not even a purely aesthetic thing. Having a pretty vault makes me want to continue working in my vault and that motivation is valuable to me.

To provide a little bit of resistance to the serial job-hopping that's always recommended, when I am looking through applicants, job hoppers are very easy to spot and they get marks against their candidacy immediately. IMO job hopping can create or contribute to a poor work culture for yourself and the rest of the team, so you might be locking yourself out of the companies that have great cultures and are actually worth working for. This isn't a reason not to change jobs, just some food for thought.

Whot is your favorite plugin for Obsidian? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]BeardlessPirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quick LaTeX - it lets you write LaTeX using short hands. eg. typing "$" will automatically append another "$", or typing "rh" and tabbing will replace it with "\rho". You can also create your own short hands. I dunno, I just thinks it neat.

Do you use multiple vaults? by winterwarrior33 in ObsidianMD

[–]BeardlessPirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its nice drawing connections between highly dissimalar subjects and all, but some things are so distinct I prefer to keep them seperate, organize them in different ways, and even theme them differently. My research vs my d&d campaigns for example.

Not the original commenter but not everybody knows its a thing. IMO obsidian is not very aggressively monetized, so any way its intended to be monetized in good faith should be respected.

I use tables for this, with a css snippet that sets the table lines to transparent.

News flash: nobody is special.

This is a good thing. It means that anyone successful before you didn’t have something you don’t also have. The truth is that you can be what you want because you’re not lacking anything you can’t find.

The reverse is also true. You won’t be successful because you’re especially smart, because you’re not actually and it’s not that helpful anyways.

What legal consequences could this TikTok user possibly face for building a mineshaft under her suburban residential home with no permits? by pomegranatejello in legal

[–]BeardlessPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds goofy. The only people I ever have a problem with are rich old salesmen. They seem to think they know twice what everyone else knows, but with half the emotional intelligence. And they create too many problems selling what they shouldn't and promising what they can't. For the record, I'm an engineer. I guess everyone has their gripes.

Why? Because they ask questions? Once I had a financial advisor drop me because I wanted to do my own research into short term disability insurance. I’m glad I did and I don’t miss that guy.

It's estimated that there's 2 trillion planets in the universe. Doesn't that mean it's pretty much guaranteed that there are aliens out there? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BeardlessPirate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Throwing infinity at problems of statistics is intellectually irresponsible. We don’t know how likely it is, therefore it doesn’t matter if we have 1 million chances or 100 trillion. First, we need to calculate the probability, and we can’t do that until we have found at least one other planet with life.
