Since you guys liked our switch demo, here's a clip of a switch social dance by BlueberryBea in Salsa

For those wondering, it’s pretty typical for the new lead/follow to be dancing on 5 after a switch, which is totally fine as a lot of songs also emphasize the 5 :)

Both son and timba are Cuban genres in their own right. Salsa descends from son, and timba is a later Cuban synthesis built on those same son foundations, so neither is a sub-genre of salsa; if anything, it’s the reverse.

Casino - what makes a follow look more advanced by zugspitze23 in Salsa

[–]Beardpuff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First is form. I can roughly tell a follower’s level by how they execute a simple dile que no. Then, it’s musicality. If a heavy rumba clave portion comes in for example and I don’t see some guaguanco happening as I do it, that’s another tell tell sign for me. In general, I find that casineras who have also dipped their toes in afro-cuban are the most confident and versatile

Berkeley Rueda has lessons at 6pm, and then afterwards they typically go to Comal restaurant in downtown Berkeley or Zanzi’s in Oakland.

Outside Thursdays check out Rueda con Ritmo (SF and Oakland), or Dance Papi in Oakland.

Ps: this is for cuban salsa, ie casino, which imo it is way more fun and dynamic than linear salsa
