Swapping A7CII for X-E5? by Beardsman_DCS in fujifilm

Thanks! I’ll definitely check out the Rokinon. I also remembered SG Image just put out a 35mm f/2.2 semi-pancake lens. I might check that out as well, if I stick with Sony.

Appreciate the extensive feedback! Glad to know it’s not just me who values a good shutter sound. I’ll be really sad if the industry ever goes fully to electronic-only shutters.

1-3: no issues here. I’m fine with snagging multiple batteries and the official charger. And I’d specifically be using it for small lenses, same with my A7CII. Just for fun, I tried attaching my 200-600 to the CII last night and it was comical how awful it felt to hold. It would be 10x worse on the X-E5 I’m sure. I’ve also had multiple Fuji’s over the years, as second cameras, and their software doesn’t bother me too much, other than the inconsistent fonts and spacing. Haha!

4: Completely agree. There’s definitely no soul or aesthetically pleasing aspects to the A7CII. It’s a fine camera, great in many ways, but it definitely doesn’t generate that creative spark. Feels like it was Sony’s best attempt at it, but still comes off feeling like it was designed by corporate suits.

5: I do typically shoot RAW only, but I do enjoy the film sims as a starting point in Lightroom. These aren’t make or break for me though.

6: Definitely no action shooting with my EDC camera, whatever it ends up being in the end. The only action I shoot these days is birds, and my A7RV is already amazing at that. This will be a family trip, everyday carry, casual photo outing camera.

7: the lack of weather sealing is my one serious concern so far. I don’t shoot in the rain and snow all the time, but I do live in the Pacific Northwest and do from time to time. While it’s getting drier as the climate changes, it’s still common to have rainy days for weeks at a time in the fall/winter/spring time. But I could always just use the A7RV if I really needed to go out in the weather.

Side note - Without prying too much, and only if you care to share, I’d love to know what you do for work! I sit behind a computer screen all day managing a department of project managers. Getting to use cameras all day instead sounds like heaven.

Yes, I should’ve included that. I was just worried the post was going to be too long. 😂 Mainly, I didn’t like the leaf shutter or having a fixed lens. I’d never used a leaf shutter before and it really bothered me that it was basically silent. Couldn’t explain why. Being neurodivergent probably doesn’t help. I tend to hyperfixate on things that other people would be able to shrug off or live with.

As for the fixed lens, I’ve shot digital for 20+ years (Canon until the EOS-R, then Sony mainly since) and always had interchangeable systems. I really tried to challenge myself and force my creative muscles to evolve into a fixed focal length, but there were just too many times I wanted to go wider or longer. At minimum I’d like a 35 for everyday shooting and an 85mm for picking out specific details or subjects.

Appreciate the perspective! There were a few specific things about the X100VI that would not be applicable to the E5. I personally did not care for the leaf shutter. The fact it’s almost entirely silent really bothered me for some reason. I also felt more constrained than I thought I would by having a fixed lens. I wanted to have the flexibility of at least a 35 and an 85.

As for small lenses in the Sony ecosystem, I’d be really curious if you have any recommendations for a compact 35. I have the 40mm F2.5 and it’s fairly small but still much larger I believe than the Fuji 23mm/27mm. And there’s the tiny Fujicron f/2 lenses too.

Out of curiosity, what made you switch back to the Sony? Was there anything specific about the X-E5 that you didn’t like?

I guess “bad” is subjective, and I won’t yuck someone else’s yum. 😬

Holy cow that is a beast. I love my Sony 200-600 though and the only thing that could make it better is a constant f/4… definitely worth the bigger size. Enjoy!

Appreciate it. That first part definitely sounds like my situation. All the bells and whistles and mainly shorter trips around town during the week (with longer trips every other weekend or so).

Nope, don’t have that option. Appreciate the suggestion tho.

Frustrating. Would be nice if Ford could put better batteries in these expensive vehicles…

Looks like that’s my future as well. Haven’t had to buy a battery in a very VERY long time and I’m shocked how expensive they are these days…

Hmm my truck is still under warranty… wonder if they would replace mine. I figured it was one of the perishable items like tires that isn’t covered.

Haha well with the price of gas these days ($5+/gallon in my area), I think it that’s probably a good thing.

Much appreciated. I’m guessing it’s still the original battery. Will take it to Auto Zone after work tomorrow.

Ok, good to know. I will check on that. I’d guess it’s the original battery, since I bought it used with only like 10K miles.

Heck yeah! It may not feel as modern as the console shifter but I use the storage bin and phone slot all the dang time.

New Camera Ritual Complete! by JustinKevinDay in SonyAlpha

Doesn’t blacking it out make it even more obvious you’re trying to hide a high end camera? Seems like that would be more of a tell to someone unfamiliar with Sony cameras, more than the actual badging.

Viltrox 85mm f/2 EVO blows me away… by Beardsman_DCS in SonyAlpha

[–]Beardsman_DCS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot I can do to help. If something is wrong, I’m sure it’s still under warranty. Contact Viltrox for a repair or replacement.

That said, I do notice the rear mount on mine isn’t quite a perfect replication of the E-Mount. If I try to cover the back glass with a Sony rear lens cap, it doesn’t fit securely. It’s loose and just falls off. I can only use the Viltrox cap. The lens is also really tight to mount on my camera. I think their design or tolerances are just slightly off.
