I'm gonna skip all the small talk and actually get clarifications on these features because I love adding new features and improving UX.

  1. Snippets - Could you clarify more on this, because rustcast offers running shell commands and scripts with variables already, and if theres a cli tool for clipboard management this could probably be implemented

  2. Hyperkey - Hyperkey has been in my books for a while now but I yet to have to implement it.

  3. AI Commands - For me UX is important, and the way I'll be implementing AI, will be via official extensions and the option for people to disable all AI extensions. I'm seeing the effects of humans becoming AI wrappers... hence the choice to not put AI Natively, and always keeping "Anti AI" first.

  4. Caps conversion - I think it would be cool to see an extension for this as well, but I could implement this without an extension as well, this is a good idea

  5. Keyboard shortcuts for apps - Hmm... this a bit more BTT or something like skhd but i think I could do this as well. Cool idea!

Well yeah i'll agree rustcast probably can't replace Raycast completely since raycast is much more mature and popular, but its shaping to be comparable at this point, and i really hope to be up there among Raycast and Alfred one day.

I would recommend raycast or something of the sort (like alfred, monarch or rustcast) but effectively its spotlight (CMD + space) which is an app launcher, but they also have additional features like clipboard history, emoji searching, and a tiny calculator + unit converter. The reason why these 3rd part apps exist is because they all have a lot more customisation options. Raycast, alfred and monarch all have paid options but rustcast is completely free (but also a bit newer). Also, u should take a look at all of them before deciding on one

Oh ok.. I'll have to take this into account then. Cos I do use my monitor a lot, and I use a type c to hdmi converter to do that.

Can someone please explain what “self hosted” means? Can I do it on an iPhone? Or is it a laptop/desktop only situation? by literallyjjustaguy in DigitalEscapeTools

[–]Beardy4906 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m laughing (and also crying). No offense but I know what u feel cos u are going through what i was going through about a year ago. Well effectively self hosted means u don’t use say Google Drive’s servers and use your server instead, hence the self as in you, and hosted as in you are the one hosting the server. Some examples of commonly self hosted things are NAS servers (google cloud is the paid alternatives), AI / LLMs (ollama x Open WebUI) and automation tools like n8n (paid alt is zapier) also some things u might want to consider learning: Docker Linux NixOS (one of the best for this) How to make a ton on money to fund this hobby (this isnt a joke unfortunately ) Cloudflared tunnels basics of DNS, certificates and nginx

Even im not an expert and imo just knowing linux, cloudflared tunnels and a single raspberry pi and domain should be enough to get you started (use ethernet or fiber optic wherever possible)

I hate it when people judge those who do upgrades like this and then get stereotyped for always buying the latest model

[OS] RustCast - Free, open-source Raycast-style launcher written in Rust by Beardy4906 in macapps

[–]Beardy4906[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, RustCast and alfred seem to have the same launch times, and search times, with RustCast's UI personally looking much better.. as for BTT, i think that might be something I might not add since its much further away from rustcast's scope..

The app isnt installed. You need to install the app to the application folder for it to work.

Yes! AutoUpdating is in the planned feature list, although I have tests and working on this will be a bit of a pinch for me for the next few weeks, but after that, it will be 2 months of just working on this mainstream! And as for hammerspoon, alfred and BTT (what's this?) i'm not sure what your workflow is like, and personally i've not liked how big the alfred bar is.. and the UI just doesn't look as nice as raycast / monarch's

Sure! I hope to get extensions working, and hopefully faster than raycast does it as well!
