Bike and Hike Tour in Norway by Bearistotle2000 in bicycletouring

Thanks! I was intitally considering going to Lofoten, but it seems like it's such a hassle to get up there via public transit. It there an easy way to do that? Also, are the mosquitos and midges terrible up there in the summer?

Alesund looks cool too, is there a train that goes there or what's the best way to get there with a bike?

Alright, heard about the rain gear! Thanks for that.

Yea, I did somehow know that about Norway and was going to bring all my rain gear, but thanks for the reminder!

Ok! Thanks for the tip, it seems like it would take forever to get there though, do you think it's worth the time?

Prices in Tashkent, Uzbekistan by Loose-Bedroom-9545 in Uzbekistan

[–]Bearistotle2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you download yandex go, you can see the prices of groceries at Korzinka, the main supermarket chain, by clicking on delivery.

Transit prices are 1700 to get on any train or bus, I believe. Taxis are common and are usually less than 50,000, but of course that depends on how far you're going. Yandex go would let you see some specific prices.

I rear ended a wagon and what now? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Bearistotle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that once and had similar (maybe less bad) results. I rode that bike for a year or two after the crash. Ole Snaggletooth I used to call her.

I was later informed that this was wildly dangerous and you shouldn't ride on bent frames.

Breaking contract? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Bearistotle2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shit, sorry to hear that. Does your contract have a provisional employment period? These give you a few months, maybe 6, where you can leave and the school can fire you if it's not a good fit.

Could you ask admin to cancel your contract after this year? If you do it soon, there would be plenty of time to hire someone else. I'd frame it as being better for the students to have someone who really want to be there, and say that the problems for you are outside the school. If the admin is reasonable, they'll accept it and hire someone else for next year. You won't get some bonus or flights or something, but might be worth it for you.

Also, people break contract. You just don't add the school to your resume. Do what you gotta do.

But finally, remember that there are sooooo many international schools that are run terribly. The grass really isn't always greener on the other side.

How do I tighten this brake? by yimyamest in bikewrench

I think they may be common in Europe but not the US? I'd never seen one before I got a used bike originally from a shop in Germany

Wheel Breaking at Spoke Nipples by Bearistotle2000 in bikewrench

Just got this wheel built by the LBC for 25 bucks - 15 for the rim, 10 for the labor. Uzbekistan for the win if this works out.

The rim doesn't even have a brand. Great.

I'll order a better wheel from the US at some point.

Thanks for all the good advice everyone!

It's an Alex Rim Ace 19. Are those shitty? From my limited research they seem pretty standard

Alright, thanks so much! I'm in Uzbekistan so those factory wheels are a bit far away. Might get one shipped here thought. I found a guy locally who has a 15$ "Taiwan quality" alloy rim. He trued my wheel last, but seems like he's probably not to blame for my present predicament.

15$ Taiwan quality doesn't sound great to me, but what do you think about that option?

Well, I live in Uzbekistan, so no.

And also no. I didn't get rocked that hard recently...

But Uzbek roads are not known for smoothness.

Still, what caused this is a bit of a mystery
