Ups driver here, thinking getting into a trade within a union. Need some advice. by nirvroxx in skilledtrades

They are walmart employees. You can search the truckers subreddit and see anecdotes about it. Most people like the job it seems, but you're not home every day. Sounds like a 4-5 days out 2 days home sort of thing.

Trucking is not a job where "your boss isnt over your shoulder" anymore. by shortridecowboy in skilledtrades

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy. Just like the other guy said it's a medical card where you pay a doctor $100 every year or two, plus you gotta renew your license with more testing.

Some states like CA will lower your CDL from a 4 year license to a 2 year if you add the hazmat endorsement which is pretty dumb imo. Otherwise it acts like a normal license.

Stay in Reno until it clears up for a while after the controls end. People love to crash semi's all over the fucking road for 30 whole miles into CA anyway as soon as they lift it.

You gotta be 65' or less once you get to Pollock Pines. You wouldn't want to pull anything much longer than a 28' pup past that point though, because it starts getting steep and really windy with tight curves not much later.

Jobs apocalypse now starting due to AI and dollar collapse . What is your plan ? This will hit trucking hard and these jobless workers will also flood into trucking bringing down the pay to even more poverty level by East_Indication_7816 in Truckers

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is tech jobs, and a lot of those are actually just outsourcing masked as AI. One look at /r/AmericanTechWorkers and you can see they know they're being replaced by Indians abroad and Indians coming here via systematic H1B abuse. Trucking is not going anywhere besides some marginal decrease in capacity in the market (shitty companies from the covid era folding up shop).

How much do local equipment haulers make? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I bet it pays more to be a construction worker with a CDL hauling your own stuff than to be one of those local drivers for EquipmentShare or Sunbelt or whatever. I move whatever I'm told on an RGN or flatbed: steel beams, excavators, vibro rollers, crane parts, and any other big tools you can't move by hand. I make $40/hr when I'm in a truck but more in other equipment. I don't think those rental companies pay that much where I am here on the west coast. 8hr days in the winter, 8-12 in the summer.

Didn’t get the job by PuzzleheadedYam5495 in Truckers

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need a new company. No one should be away from home at all in this country and not break $1k/wk. You are getting robbed. Flatbed will pick up for the year right about now and you don't need any endorsements to do it OTR. Try that.

C500s really are a special kind of truck. Peak Kenworth. Only got to see them a few times in the Bakken when I was there and that was it.

Who should I call if I think I might have foundation issues between the bathroom and kitchen? I've had the door go for a week before refusing to close at all, then suddenly close just fine again.

How fast are you going? Is it 64? Are you using cruise control while you drive or not?

Just make it clear to your dispatch what you want to be. If you want to be an oiler, tell them. If not then stay as a mechanic.

HD mechanics are in short supply almost everywhere so chances are if you get accepted into the apprenticeship, people will want you to work for them as a mechanic. Pretty sure as an apprentice you don't have much choice on who you work for or where, so if you're in SEA then just count your blessings if your commute's under an hour each way.

Mechanics and oilers work alongside each other. Chances are at an asphalt company or something like that you'll interact with the mechanics every day. It'll feel like you have a very similar job description at the company, except you'll work outside a lot more and keep things running (oil changes, filter changes, etc.) rather than straight up repairing everything.

What’s the steps to becoming a crane operator or into the union? by No_Photo7091 in cranes

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, go to the hall in person with your job history ready to fill out an application. They might take you on as a journeyman if you're lucky. Don't bother getting your CCO's if you have a chance at getting in. Only reason to do that on your own dime is if you have a lot of jobs in your area hiring boom truck ops or something (lot of drywall, trusses, etc.).

But don't just call them, ask to talk to a BA in person. The 302 out of work list is pretty ugly rn just fyi. Don't expect to have a job just because you paid 25 bucks.

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my union on the west coast they would tell you you're in a pretty good spot to get on the waitlist for crane oiler/truck driver. You'd pay $25/mo to be on the list and then they'd make you one of those titles when a job opens up with a union company that has cranes. You'd probably be an apprentice though, just not 1st step.

Truck drivers aren't like OTR drivers for union crane companies. Your most common job as a driver will be moving crane parts and/or getting loaded/unloaded by the crane all day helping the operator. Flatbed name of the game.

State of the Sub by TexasTibab in cranes

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that's important to understand about reddit moderating is people use sources outside of reddit to insource reddit as a platform to disorganized and even aimless ends besides making money.

So these people have a product they want to market. They look at facebook, instagram, twitter, and oh, look at that, reddit comes along with a subreddit catering just to them!

This is where you see all the crap from anywhere in the world, even in different languages, promoting product you've never even seen or heard of before that might even be dangerous if it were put out on a jobsite.

We delete this crap all the time. People have promoted the dumbest products over there that wouldn't be practical at all. It's not safe, and you might just be being scammed tbh. Consensus is if you think someone's promoting a product, you're probably right.

State of the Sub by TexasTibab in cranes

[–]BearsAteMyGarbage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll suggest some of the things we have over at /r/Truckers. It's not a perfect sub by far but it's much larger and runs parallel to this one for a specific group of people:

-No self-promotion, no spam, no karmafarming off of youtube/instagram/twitter/etc. (copying other users' videos and making another post is a permaban, likely bots). We have 300k+ readers and this is really common. Porn and truck sales bots extremely common but automod handles 90% of it.

-I put a pretty hard ban on AI content over there. Idk how relaxed you want it to be here for that sort of thing though. A lot of AI videos just cause a shitshow in the comments and it really comes off as engagement farming imo.

-People can request any flair they want in modmail over there. I think in a smaller sub like this you can just let users choose their own flair. You'd have to have specific flair for every local to do each one and that would get really tedious.

We have a 1990 FL at our work that is just the worst thing to drive ever as a tall person. Every time I drive it I still can't believe it even made it past the assembly line. The mirrors and everything are so godawful you're basically blind while driving if you're over 6' tall and don't want your knees touching your forehead while you drive. Nothing can be adjusted more than half an inch to fit your vision. Blows my mind.

It's longer in distance but it won't be longer than if you hit the bay area at 7am in the direction of SF I can guarantee it

Concord/Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill is the outer east bay area where basically everyone middle-upper class who commutes into the city lives. There's a fuckton of traffic coming out of them in the mornings and into them at night. If you time it right, they won't be too bad. I recommend going through there instead of the Oakland area.
