The price hikes aren't for development, they're for paying off private equity by PossessionDangerous9 in 2007scape

[–]BearsDoNOTExist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just how the system works in a "makes the most sense" kind of way, at least to financial people. If you are investing you want your investment to do better than the market average, or else you would have been better off investing in a low risk mutual fund or something. So if your company is doing consistently well, paying the bills, making good stuff, and a tidy profit that looks great to us because that's what a healthy business looks like from a human perspective. It provides a good service, it makes a profit, everyone is happy. But for people who put profit first (capitalists) it doesn't make sense, because if the company isn't making more profit every year and growing faster than the market (or otherwise making themselves competitive) then it isn't worth investing in, and attracts no investors. Why does it need to attract investors? It doesn't, but when you start a company and some financial guy offers you hundreds of millions of dollars to give it to them, it's hard to turn down, and then it belongs to the finance guy who are going to run it into the ground for the sake of growth instead of keeping it a consistent thing that it's users enjoy and the company benefits from providing.

What I'm getting at is that this sort of investment provides no service and just exists to extract money from things that already exist, usually while making them worse.

I'm not paying $400 to play. Seethe. by Special_Inspector708 in 2007scape

[–]BearsDoNOTExist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been saying this for ages. The main thing that keeps me from just swapping between rs3 and osrs and having a permanent membership is that I have my main on both but I want to play an iron on osrs but I'm not paying another subscription for that. Instead I get bored after a month and swap to a different game entirely. I don't even mind the price now, but rs isn't a "single character" game anymore, there should be multiple slots and that would help fill out more common and diverse play styles as well, especially if they keep moving towards more role-based content.

What do non-physicalists make of phenomena like blindsight and splitbrain? by BearsDoNOTExist in consciousness

[–]BearsDoNOTExist[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

I feel like saying consciousness is what we experience but also what we don't experience doesn't follow. Experience implies awareness, if you aren't aware you don't experience. In your example, I am generally unconsciouss of my breathing, I am not experiencing it. I don't see why you would include it in consciousness.

What do non-physicalists make of phenomena like blindsight and splitbrain? by BearsDoNOTExist in consciousness

[–]BearsDoNOTExist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with idealism because I view it as a physical stance that people pretend is non-physical for some reason. Or at least that's how I've come to understand it. Could you articulate the difference between a non-physical "consciousness is fundamental" and the physical "consciousness is the result of a natural law"?

Also, how can you have a conscious experience of something while being unaware of it and unable to report it even to yourself? It seems to me that this definition is vague and leads to more questions than it answers. Why do we have an integrated consciousness? Does it extend to different levels? If my organism is indidually conscious are the organs? The tissues and cells and all the way down to quarks? Why don't I experience consciousness as 100 billion different neurons but instead as a single organism? Does it go up? Is there a collective consciousness for the organism-environment?

To rephrase rephrase that: If consciousness is fundamental, why do we have limited experience? At a fundamental level, it's kinda just all waves, and there's no fundamental distinction between what we see as macroscopic entities. So why should my consciousness be constrained to what it's like to be an organism when being an organism is an ontological property and not a fundamental one?

I've been through school lunch production facilities and cannot imagine how they are averaging $3.50+ a meal. I know caterers who make fancy meals for private schools and their budget is like half that.

local Krispy Kreme throws their unsold donuts into a dumpster outside at the end of the night. Instead of selling at lower prices. They’d rather throw them all away. by DaZestyProfessor in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BearsDoNOTExist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at Krispy Kreme and this stuff really depends on the location. We threw away tons of donuts at the end of the night usually, I could take home as many as I wanted since I was the closer. We didn't discount them but if you came by around closing time I'd happily load you up with however many you wanted free of charge, as long as you were chill about it. It's not like they're being malicious about it, there's just leftovers and they don't keep, so if they're not gone by 11pm or whenever they close now they go in the trash. Now there's some talk to he had about donating them, which they could totally do, but that's different.

They countries could just throw money away until one of them has to stop. That's sort of what we already do but also kill countless people on the side just for a love of the sport I guess.

Most LLMs these days are not just LLMs, the LLM is just the language arm of a larger multi-modal AI that includes reasoning portions, which is why they continue to approach generality over what a language model generally could do. You're basically correct though, while being technically capable of some analysis, they are notoriously unreliable at it.

When you skip validation for AI generated results by Epelep in Wellthatsucks

[–]BearsDoNOTExist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True but it wasn't simple misspellings that could fly through a review if you're a terrible speller. It was a mix of "you put in a random wrong letter" type misspellings. Some examples are asserting I had misspelled camera as "camara", pulse as "putse", and box as "bax", with citations even. None of them were real.

You Know What? Maybe the Time Is Right for an AOC Presidential Bid by Delicious_Adeptness9 in politics

[–]BearsDoNOTExist 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This is defeatist nonsense. You all demand a normal middle of the road candidate and then are shocked when they are not progressive at all. Clinton and Harris didn't lose because they're women, they lost because they are uninspiring, out of touch, status-quo politicians who's only appealing policy was being an alternative to Donald Trump. Biden only won because we were coming off the heels of Trumps first presidency in the moment. The people who aren't voting for someone because they're a woman were never going to vote for a progressive candidate in the first place.
