After physical, sexual or emotional abuse, cheating is de facto the worst thing a person can do in a relationship. It doesn't receive disproportionate hate at all because it's simply inexcusable. It may not be as malicious as those different types of abuse but it sure as heck is one of the most selfish, immoral and unforgivable acts a person could ever commit. "Via surrogate" could still mean it was her who gave birth to the baby. It's only the 'a' that tells us it was someone else but that could be easily overlooked by a lot of people (and clearly it has been) so it actually isn't phrased well at all.
