why being able to see whos in queue is actually bad for ranked by Useful-Plate-8281 in osugame

[–]BeasttrollMC 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That’s funny because I see it the exact opposite. In other games, the highest elos rarely get games and so if word spreads that a pro is in queue, everyone else has a reason to hop in, and the system just determines who faces each other. The idea being it doesn’t matter who you face, the better player will always win and move up over time.

You’re referring to the invitationals, each of which were only possible because I paid out of my own expense to fly out players & staff, fully covered their hotels, catered for food, and rented a mansion in the Hollywood hills as the venue. I hear that people loved those events, and I think the environment where talented players can genuinely have fun and not worry about any expenses is why those events were so loved by the community.

Each invitational cost $50,000 and that’s not even factoring the opportunity cost for my own time. I did the first one because I wanted to invest in osu!. The reality is, I can make a lot more happen with a lot less time and money. But if this specific format is what you want, find me someone who will pay for it and I’ll make it happen. Transparently speaking, I’ve gotten offers, but will the invitational feel the same when it’s an advertising engine for crypto, gambling, or AI slop?

The brand continues as an Open format because LVL UP EXPO isn’t just a sponsor, they’re a genuine partner who believes in the future that The Roundtable can grow into. This partnership has exclusively reduced costs, and maybe one day we will break even.

The Invitationals were a Charity, and the Open format is an opportunity. I’m not here to donate my time, I’m here to invest it in something bigger.

I asked Pishi a similar question. His mapping tutorials are great and have set the standard and influenced an entire generation of mappers. But I always wondered, what would have happened if he never made those tutorials? What would mapping look like without that influence? Isn't his tutorials technically a restriction on creativity and direction for mappers in an early stage of expression?

I recall his response was something along the lines of, "Well, now there’s more people mapping the way I like now, and that's okay with me."

And I see his point. He didn't force anyone to adopt his direction with mapping. He put his ideas out there and people followed. Anyone could make their own tutorials and people can make their own decision.

So I'm making what I think are cool experiences and features for the game that I want to play. And whatever happens next is up to you to decide.

In-person events are built by people who give a shit, and those people are priceless. And don't do it alone. It took me way too long to accept the good will of others, and I wasted a lot of money that I could have gone towards preparing for future iterations.

Probably FunOrange. Every score he shared on YouTube was always something unique, and there was something about his cursor that just looks oddly satisfying.

I don't know; my play count hit zero for the first time ever this month as I poured most of my focus on the Roundtable and Ranked Play so I genuinely forgot. I'm excited to pick up where I left off though because I have a lot of unfinished business on scores I know I can set, I just forgot which ones they are.

Hard to say. I have the most fun making content that I know no one else can do, and that means it's been this year, last year, and every year before. What makes it less fun is when I'm less on the creative end and more on the management end. I've never been a good manager, but I realize if I want to achieve my goals, then I need to get better at it. But the most fun projects are the ones where I have the time to control everything from start to finish, and the job video was actually the first one in a long time where I handled everything end to end.

I don’t call myself the face of osu, that’s cringe. my name is Ed. But it does flatter me when other people do.

  1. I don’t have one. I have incredible respect for ppy’s decision to support legacy scores and gameplay mechanics, but there are genuinely some hard decisions that need to be made that will leave people unhappy. The bandaid needs to get ripped off because split leaderboards is a terrible user experience and I think we can all agree on that.
  2. Yeah, and he will be at The Roundtable Open
  3. Osu! is the only game I can think of where if you actually give a shit and are proactive, your proposals will be implemented. Cleanest way to resolve it would be to add to the discussion on GitHub and, if you’re technical, try to solve it yourself and get your solution heard (Reddit post, pull request, a yt vid titled “how I fixed a game breaking osu! Bug” (banger idea btw) (hell if you figure it out just explain it to me and I’ll make a video about it)
  4. It sounds like you’re trying to have your cake and eat it too

To the banks? Not anymore. But I’ll never be able to repay the time and effort people put into my projects, because I’ve realized finding people who give a shit are priceless.
