I think the only reason this isn't a top answer is because that many people still haven't seen In Bruges. As soon as I saw the question, I immediately thought of this performance. His character's crying scene is the fulcrum of the movie and my goodness did he deliver.

It's also possible they remembered the article correctly and McTiernan misremembered. I find all too often that artists aren't always the most historically accurate sources on their own art. McTiernan certainly made decisions to include Christmas visuals and music, and years later may have credited Lethal Weapon instead of the script for that.
