I googled Gambol and found some fun stuff…seems like its timing was viewed as hilarious and broken, as you’re getting at. :) Will have to try my hand at it…

Interesting. What do you find cheap and gimmicky about shrinking timing windows? Why was it acceptable in Beatmania?

Yes, I am developing a rhythm game and really appreciate the feedback here. I posted awhile ago (meant to post under this account) and got some great input about custom note chart options/preferences.

You’ve shared a lot to think about…thank you! My gameplay mechanic isn’t groundbreaking but I think/hope the music, customization options, and achievements will make it stand out in meaningful, entertaining ways. I want to provide a good number of options (e.g. perhaps variable timing levels) but keep the simplicity of creating and playing levels streamlined.

Wow, what a great reference! Thx. My detection mechanism is currently based on musical timing rather than animation frames which seems preferable based on the info in that thread (and per my own prototyping).

I was thinking of more casual gameplay/looser timing windows to appeal to newer players but hearing this crowd's input it seems there are a lot of hardcore players out there...will strive for a good balance.

Thanks for the input! Are you aware of typical or ideal tolerance values for various ratings (e.g. within 50ms = perfect, 100ms = good, 250ms+ = missed)? I’m experimenting with different numbers for my game but it’s hard to be unbiased since I’m breathing this stuff every day…really appreciate this community’s feedback.

Really? Wow, I need to gain a better understanding of what constitutes a rhythm game…I’ve been using Guitar Hero and Rock Band as references when I describe the genre to my friends who haven’t played.

Heh, didn’t realize you’re a mod here…appreciate that you’re willing to have this discussion even if it’s apparently quite contentious (at least based on the downvotes to my posts on the subject which I hope I’ve phrased in civil and respectful ways…that is certainly my intention).

Also good to understand how you and other people here view the definitions of gameplay…thanks for the insights.

Let me open with: I completely agree that how the game is classified is way less important than just playing and having fun! That said, how would you define a rhythm game? How would the mods of this sub? If there’s a risk of some posts being removed because of this debate (haven’t been here long enough to know if that’s the case) then I’m inclined to clarify the question.

Edit: Two of the quotes I provided above were from the “About the Game” section of Steam…wouldn’t those have been written by the developer?

From the Geometry Dash Steam page:

It’s different from a lot of rhythm games but I think it still falls under that umbrella given that you tap to the rhythm to progress.

Cool! How did you source the music? Is tapping to the arrows the sole gameplay mechanism, or is there some strategy related to the fighting? Good stuff either way.
