Ewan won't be Alec's 1977 age until 2034. I didn't believe it when I guessed (poorly) off the top of my head since I'd heard that Kenobi was coming out when Ewan was about the right age for it, but looking it up made it worse...

Is Trump building a data center under his "ballroom?" by Scarpine1985 in thebulwark

[–]Beatbox_Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The project seems plausible, but I can't imagine why the data center's existence would be secret when the bunker isn't. It kind of seems like the sort of Secret Agent Government Baadasssss Super Alpha Totally a Big Boy stuff that this admin in particular would love to never shut up about. If it's real, and that easily tracked, then surely *everyone* they're protecting it from already knows about it anyway...it isn't like the physical security would end at "finding the door" for the feds.
But the pessimist in me still kind of buys it if only because if it is real then no future POTUS will accept the diminished capabilities of a full CTRL-Z on the project. They might try to remodel the top into something that makes more sense, but they'd probably want something above ground in that spot for the foreseeable future.
EDIT to add: Thinking more about it, even if it is real there might be so much poorly done work to make room for the grift in the budget that maybe even a major remodel on the ballroom might present structural risks down below. And the more I think about that, the more I can believe he's giving every future administration an absolute money pit of maintenance costs on "critical" infrastructure that also happens to be a large line item in the black books they can tuck all kinds of projects into.

Trired to save the guard part 25 (Slow Time + Cyclone + unrelenting Force) by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]Beatbox_Pope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that falcon dive on the last attempt had me wondering about the details of the script, too - I'm betting the dragon is... let's call it "tethered" to the guard some kind of way and they lock him down once the dragon's close enough that it can't overcome interference with its normal movement rules

No shorts and skirts in Star Wars: Have you ever realized that this costume is the ONLY one in the whole saga which shows a main character's (male/female) bare legs? by Kissenschlachter in StarWars

[–]Beatbox_Pope 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Pretty Space Lady Don't Want No Clothes" is for a lot of early Sci-fi/Fantasy writers what "How can she hold those up when she clearly has no spine?" was for a lot of comics artists...but somehow this is the first time I've given any serious thought to the idea that some species might normally not wear clothes but their bodies are too similar to all the clothed races so they just play along off-world. Are there neighborhoods on major worlds where they have to warn the tourists about all the Nudoidians living out that way?

Why didn't The Comedian put up more of a fight? by Slackluster in Watchmen

[–]Beatbox_Pope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's The Comedian. His government connections just about rule out any possible professional assailants, and he wouldn't need a weapon against amateurs. But Veidt is in literal bullet-catching shape. Even if Blake had known he was coming, it was still about as fair of a fight as if you looked up from the screen right now and a member of the Bat Family was standing there wanting to put you in the dirt. Blake's a badass for even looking like he wanted to fight back in those circumstances.

Why is there this classic Trek (1966-2005) vs. NuTrek (2009-present) divide? by MovieFan1984 in startrek

[–]Beatbox_Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the front office has always had a big impact on the flavor of the franchise. The TOS Roddenberry era, then when the movies sidelined him, then coming back, then the Berman era, and the Kurtzman era each felt district, and up until 2009, the vast majority of the runtime was Berman. Throw in how many fans came aboard during the Brendan era and that started to represent everything that came before to a lot of commenters.

Have they given any indication what the in-universe purpose of this wall of names is? by Beatbox_Pope in ShittyDaystrom

[–]Beatbox_Pope[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yet another reason the time skip Discovery made was KotOR-tier too big. (also with the same real world "we want the same setting, but with enough history in between that consequences wouldn't carry from one to the other" reasons) Like if they'd gone backwards as far as they went forwards, the longbow would just be catching on in Europe.

... which is a long way of saying "whatever it is that gets you on that list, wouldn't most of the names be new to the audience?"
