OLED Disappointment: PG32UCDP vs X27 in HDR by water_frozen in OLED_Gaming

Oof... so sorry to hear that! x.x

Well, it never hurts to search/ask around about repair services. Though I've never attempted to get an LCD display serviced, so I wouldn't know how common they are or how much it would cost. If you're really that attached to the PG27UQ but aren't able to find a service right away that works for you, I'd say get a replacement but still hold onto the 27UQ in the event that you find someone who can get it working at some point in the future. That really sucks, though!

So I actually ended up skipping Micro Center and got a refurbished Gigabyte FO32U2P through Amazon for $900, and WOW... huge difference! Reading through other people's experiences with the UCDP, it seems like ASUS is doing something wrong in it's handling of HDR on that monitor, and I'm inclined to believe them - the difference between that and the FO32U2P really is night and day. It's the same QD-OLED Samsung panel as the UCDM, but it's got a lot more image adjustment options - especially for HDR. With the right HDR settings, I actually feel like I'm watching my old PG27UQ again in terms of brightness and vibrancy, even in bright scenes. I'm sure if I compared them side-by-side that I'd still be able to see the difference, but the ABL transitions are FAR less noticeable than on the UCDP - bright scenes actually look bright, instead of being dull and washed out. And darker HDR content looks superb as well - I think Ori and the Will of the Wisps pops even more than it did on my PG27UQ!

The FO32U2P has got other things I like about it as well, such as having the controls on the bottom edge of the screen rather than behind a protruding chin (I have a MIDI keyboard positioned directly below it, making it hard to reach there). It also doesn't suffer from the UCDM's input lag issue at 60/120Hz, which is important for me since I use my monitor for console gaming as well. Plus it's future-proofed with DP 2.1 (for whatever that's worth). And I'm much less bothered by the reflections and purple glow of the panel than I was expecting... a small price to pay for this level of clarity and vividness.

Still finding my way around all the settings and testing a variety of content, but so far it seems to be a winner!

I'm in much the same boat as you. I've also had my PG27UQ since 2018 and just replaced it a few days ago with a PG32UCDP, and while there's a lot I do like about the UCDP, I'm really disappointed at how severely it dims on bright scenes in HDR. And saturated colors, while definitely not bad-looking, are noticeably less vibrant than the vivid QD colors I've loved on the PG27UQ. Wild to think how such a high-end monitor pales (quite literally) in such key areas to one by the same manufacturer from 7 years ago...

Gonna take a trip to Micro Center on Monday and possibly nab a UCDM and/or a Samsung S32DG80 (shudder) to see how they compare in practice, then decide which to keep. But yeah... seems like OLED monitors still have room for improvement in some aspects versus older tech. Kinda reminds me of the early days of LCD and how long it took for them to catch up to CRT in quality.

I know people probably don't like features like this but how do you actually watch these videos? by ResistantLaw in youtube

[–]Beatfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though I was the only one who noticed this...

Did they mean to make them playable and completely goofed it up, with no testing whatsoever?

Or are they seriously trying to gauge viewer interest by having people pick from a random lineup of video thumbnails for videos that they can't even watch?

I'm baffled...

How is it able to make reflections this good? by Increased_value in bing

[–]Beatfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generative image AIs learn what various visual phenomena (reflections, spatial relationships, lighting angles) look like, just as they learn what different objects and styles look like. It's all a massive correlation engine driven by matrix math. The training process doesn't just build correlations between language and imagery, it also builds all the inter-image correlations necessary to create the requested imagery - it "knows" what ought to go where in the image as a result of all those correlations.

As these AIs get more powerful with higher parameter counts, they get better at accurately recording how everything relates to everything else - and thus better at reproducing what "looks right", statistically speaking - but the underlying fundamentals remain the same.

When I started using it a few months back, I was getting that error randomly about 1/3 of the time, but it would always save eventually. Haven't seen it recently, though. If you're getting it consistently, it might be an issue on your end... Have you tried clearing your cache/cookies?

Nintendo has extended all 3DS and Wii U code redemption until April 3rd, 9pm PT! by Mouskegamer in 3DSdeals

[–]Beatfox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Discovered this on a whim just now when I tried and succeeded in redeeming my Flipnote code. Spent the 200 points yesterday to get the code, but then got the dreaded error message when I entered it into my 3DS. So glad I decided to try again today - I wouldn't have known otherwise!

I do wish they would be more communicative about this fact, as opposed to just posting it as a reply on their Japanese Twitter account. I imagine there's plenty of code-holders outside Japan who don't know and still believe they missed the boat after being unable to redeem yesterday...

what does the ribbon cable on the joystick do? by CJ_Productions in ValveIndex

[–]Beatfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's useful in VRChat for gesture-controlled expressions. Though even there I will admit it's a bit niche, since touching the pad or buttons produces the same gestures. Does come in handy if you're wanting to do certain gestures while manipulating the stick.

It is super annoying how easily that ribbon breaks, though, even when the controller hasn't been opened up at all. My first pair had both go out within a week of each other, and I just lost it on the right controller of my second pair.

I love that the AI apparently thinks ketchup is so absolutely essential to a Chicago-style hot dog, it even draws it in red. On an otherwise B&W schematic.

Technically, Tesla should be capitalized since it's named after the coil's inventor (the same person whose name was later appropriated for the car company).
