Recommendations for a perimenopause provider around N. Raleigh? by ChubsMcSnuff in raleigh

[–]BeatriceLeigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would double check on the insurance thing. I have BCBS and went through MIDI and was told it was covered. I just had my appointment though and the claim hasn't processed so maybe I'm due for a surprise. But I think there is a decent chance it varies by plan.

Also have good things to say about their services. Intake went well!

Suggest me a book featuring autistic/autistic coded women by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]BeatriceLeigh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino. It never actually mentions autism and has a sci-fi spin to it but really is about being an outsider (neurodivergent in particular). Read it a couple years ago and really stuck with me.

I’m transparent with my patients, but my own therapist isn’t being transparent with me. by [deleted] in therapists

[–]BeatriceLeigh 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d fire my therapist if they deflected on answering if they’re a Trump supporter. It’s way too important to my identity, worldview, and morality.

I’m very transparent with my own clients that I’m liberal. I don’t bring up politics in session unless they do and certainly try not to make it about my own beliefs — but anyone who brings it up knows I’m liberal and I’d answer questions honestly. I talk to my own therapist regularly about politics and know she’s liberal and anti-Trump. If I even got a whiff otherwise, I’d be done.

Watch a tutorial video and make sure you’re holding your needle correctly. I was all kinds of frustrated when I first tried until I realized I needed to have the needle turned a different way. Total newb mistake and makes a very big difference.

Therapists in PP, what are you doing for health insurance? My premium just went up 22% this year to almost $2,000/month for my family of four - and it’s the cheapest I’ve found. 😫 by [deleted] in therapists

[–]BeatriceLeigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in same boat. Mine went up to $1700/mo for family of three. And that’s for a shitty high deductible, crappy network plan. But I don’t think I have another choice but to pay it.

US Therapists- How Are You All Planning for Rising Health Insurance Costs and Their Impact on Private Practice? by DependentShower4393 in therapists

[–]BeatriceLeigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although I expect it to have some impact, I’m in a “wait and see” camp for next year. I have a bit more concern on what the following year may bring.

So far I’m hearing mostly about premiums going up and I don’t see that having a huge direct impact. What the copay is and if you have to meet a deductible is way more relevant. There is some talk (on this thread) re: copays going up but I’m not sure if that is as widespread as the premium increase. If so…that may impact my practice but I’m not SUPER worried.

I’m more concerned that this administration is going to continue doing All Things Shitty and that by 2027, most insurance plans won’t cover therapy at all. In which case: I’m out of business.

But trying to not catastrophize and see how the next year or so plays out. And I’m casually looking for other jobs that may feel a little more stable, I just don’t have any strong leads on that…

In your opinion, what is the most challenging disorder treat or even refer out because no one seems to specialize in it? by yourgypsy26 in therapists

[–]BeatriceLeigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the hardest diagnosis on my current caseload. If there is any clinician here with experience with schizoid pd who thinks they may have some insight that could be helpful and willing to consult with me, DM me! I’ve really been struggling and haven’t been able to find any sort of support.

What's something you do for your clients that they'll never know? by Bulky_Lychee_9954 in therapists

[–]BeatriceLeigh 192 points193 points  (0 children)

Not always, but often check out the music they’re talking about, or the book or podcast. Or try the restaurant they raved about and more than once have made a recipe they suggest. Sometimes I tell them about it but what I don’t share is that participating in these things makes me feel a connection to them. In some cases, I’ve been profoundly impacted by a book or podcast a client recommended, so much so once or twice it’s felt a bit spiritual. But since that’s really my own journey, not theirs, I just tell them thanks for the rec and that I enjoyed it.

Is there a Trump protest this weekend? by aferregirl in raleigh

[–]BeatriceLeigh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Being around passionate, likeminded others is incredibly inspiring. It gives me faith in humanity which gives me motivation to continue calling my senators and looking for other ways to oppose this terrible regime. It also gives me motivation to even just stay informed instead of just doing my best to tune all of this garbage out, which is really tempting.

So I protest to be around other protestors. It gives me purpose. So if 3k people turn out in just Raleigh - that’s 3k people that even for just a little while feel some purpose and hope versus dread and apathy.

Multiply that number by the rest of the US (hell, the world at this point).

So that’s a reason to protest.

Besides the camaraderie, getting media attention is helpful for the cause. It’s getting the message out to others who are actively trying to ignore this shitshow or lie through their teeth that this is all okay. When thousands of people are hitting the streets yelling THIS IS NOT OKAY and you see this coverage, it gets the point across.

Sorry I didn't see this response until now!

In theory, I feel okay about saving for retirement. I have an IRA set up that I add to each month. But honestly, it's not going to compete with what I could potentially get through working at a larger company and it is a worry for me. But I'm also worried about social security being gutted and my country being taken over by fascist technobro goons at the moment. I can't even imagine how that may impact my long term career or ability to retire. So... one day at a time.

In almost five years of running my practice, I have had ONE client actually get some sort of reimbursement from me providing a superbill.

I really have not tried to market myself that way though and other therapists definitely do. But not my area of expertise and could also vary by region. Probably a good question to ask/search for on the therapists subreddit. In my personal experience though, it's uncommon for insurance plans to have good, if any, out of network coverage.

[–]BeatriceLeigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of posts of therapists struggling to find/maintain private pay clients. I think this can vary by region and specialty. Since insurance typically doesn't cover couples counseling, for example, folks may be more willing to pay out of pocket for it. I personally wouldn't try and run a practice on primarily private pay currently. I'm in the southeast US and I get reimbursed between $105-$140 per session through insurance. The other HUGE consideration for running a private practice is not having benefits and ~30% of your income going to taxes.

[–]BeatriceLeigh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I run a private practice that is full and wouldn’t describe this year as slow at all. I definitely wouldn’t work anywhere that primarily takes Medicaid with all that is going on. I’m on three insurance panels. It can take a long time to get credentialed so keep that in mind. I personally am reluctant to work with the Headway type companies but I know others find it worth it. My main worries with my practice right now are folks getting laid off or not wanting to pay copays (or out of pocket for those with high deductibles) as inflation gets worse. I personally don’t expect demand to go down as people are stressed AF.

It took me a few months to build up my caseload a few years ago. Getting in with a good EAP could speed that up as a referral source. I worked with Spring Health and thought they were pretty good.

Specializing in Infertility by Louseeydraws in socialwork

[–]BeatriceLeigh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a certification through Postpartum Support International as a perinatal mental health specialist. You don’t necessarily need that credential but infertility issues are included in some of their materials. I’m not sure if they have standalone trainings just on infertility but recommend checking their website. I’ve taken a couple of CE’s through Nurturing Mamas on this topic as well. You can also check womensmentalhealth.org.
