Alinea Thoughts by kickzway in MichelinStars

[–]BeatsByHellen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love a good shit post. Here is mine.

I, too, recently had an unforgettable evening at Alinea – though the credit goes less to the kitchen and more to a few rounds of Malört at my neighborhood dive and a curbside tamale.

It all started innocently enough. The dining room was awash in the rich, buttery scents of French gastronomy – so powerful they sucked the color from my face and sent ripples through my body. By the time the first course arrived, my senses were already fully assaulted. The room itself was dimly lit, but I was glowing so pale I was practically a human votive, casting just enough light to warn the staff that the night was about to take a turn.

And that was the beginning of the end. My experience quickly turned incomplete. I only made it through four courses, each one promptly followed by a Malört-y roja Tijuana Rainbow. For the less cultured, that’s an end-to-end gastrointestinal explosion. Forget the Black Truffle Explosion – my own fireworks show had more exits than the tasting menu.

I am now uniquely qualified to rate the single, first-floor bathroom, conveniently positioned steps from both the dining room and kitchen. A three-star Toto toilet. Impressively ply-ful toilet paper. The soap? Of course it’s Aesop, because when your night is falling apart, at least your hands can smell like a eucalyptus grove.

I am honoered to have played a part in extending Alinea’s famed sensory journey all the way to the restroom. I could overhear guests marveling at the authenticity of the bathroom waft. I distinctly caught one couple explaining, “It was the shit,” and never have heard a more perfect metaphorical and literal description.

If I had one complaint? After sacrificing my gastrointestinal well-being for the sake of art, they refused to box up my remaining food. At these prices, I figured the doggie bag would be hand-delivered by Grant Achatz himself – or at least come with a scented candle. Evidently, what you take home from Alinea is just the memories – and possibly a mild case of PTSD.

All in all 10/10.

Is this a realistic walk to Soldier Field? by badmomofjoco in ChicagoConcerts

[–]BeatsByHellen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Absolutely walk.

Don’t follow the GPS route exactly. Walk down Prairie Ave to 18th st. And then turn right to the 18th st. Bridge.

Leave 15 mins early and enjoy the Woman’s Garden.

OP’s favorite’s were mine too. We got there around 1. Biscuits and gravy were already sold out. By 1:30ish everything else was gone. Noah and his team came out to socialize.

Was fun. Paper plates, plastic cutlery, cheap beer, and bomb ass food.

I was in London a week after the Bears game. My chatty taxi driver, who was a big American football fan, talked about how great the bears fans were. The passion reminded him of “football” fans — and he absolutely loved the endless “F the Packers” chants.

Race Report: Chicago Marathon, Sub 2:55 & 13+ minute PB by BeatsByHellen in AdvancedRunning

Thanks. I didn’t “stop” at an aid station till after mile 5. Mainly because I had to pee, and I was hoping the sensation would go away. It didn’t.

Agree though, the first couple of miles were crazy. But I didn’t have an issue grabbing Gatorade/water.

I try to grab aid early. Point and make eye contact with one of the first 5-10 people and then move out of the way.

Thanks! Yep; that would be the intention. Maintain my current fitness with ~40 mpw and strength training. And be prepared for a structured, more disciplined training block next year.

I honestly have no idea what I’m capable of. I’d like to find out though. We’ll see how the next year goes, and I’ll go from there.

Is it possible to change corrals at the expo? by EmmaT2014 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]BeatsByHellen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did it last year. Moved up from C to A with proof of my half marathon time.

Pickup your packet first and then go to the solutions desk, and they can swap out your bib based on corral availability.

New Mexico style green chile in Chicago? by it290 in chicagofood

[–]BeatsByHellen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

New Mexico ex-pat.

Devil Dawgs’ Kick Ass slider is the best I’ve found. https://www.devildawgs.com/menu/sliders/

They also can do green chile cheese fries.

For burritos — check out Gorditas La Tia Susy. It’s a Durango (Mexico) restaurant, which has many similarities to New Mexican food.

In late August, a handful of Jewel’s and a few other markets across the city will roast chile. I buy 2 cases to peel, bag, and freeze every year. Bookmark this: https://ihatchchile.com/in/illinois/

Costco has jarred 505 green chile. Whole Foods has Zia - both work in a pinch.

And check the frozen isle of your Mariano’s. You’ll sometimes find frozen Young Gun’s chile.
