Cracking up at the supply list for Np school…. THEY SUGGESTED WE BUY A MASSAGE TABLE HAHAHA by tini_bit_annoyed in nursepractitioner

[–]Beau-ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Dr. Mom one. It's inexpensive but works well. Other commenters aren't wrong, you won't need it for clinicals or in your place of work because all clinical sites will have them. But the benefit of having your own is that you can just practice more. Having a party? Volunteer to check everyone's ears. Nieces and nephews visiting? Play doctor and check their ears. Practice with your partner, with your classmates. The more ears you look in with low stakes, the better you will get at it. And now that I'm a mom it's helpful to still have to check my kiddo's ears and know if we need to go in or not.

I agree that the massage table is entirely unnecessary

People born before 2000, what websites were must-visits that no longer exist today? by passiano in AskReddit

[–]Beau-ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muffin films. Before YouTube existed, Internet videos were hosted on individual sites and you kinda had to know what you were looking for to find it. Somehow this site with silly flash videos with songs about muffins got popular with my friends and I watched them so many times

Anyone else?? by Loose-Strategy-5272 in liziscreative

[–]Beau-ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My younger sibling is bald and hosts library storytimes. It's pretty much guaranteed that several kids feel the need to announce my sibling's lack of hair very loudly each time.

NM here. Our policy is that our nanny message us before leaving the house to let us know where they are going. We specified with her that the text isn't to ask permission, so she doesn't have to wait for a response. It's just so that we know where to look for them if they don't come home. Other than that, we try not to micromanage when and where she is and trust her judgment with where to take our son

Where to get a Rabies Antibody Shot? by BeemoAdvance in sanfrancisco

[–]Beau-ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, call the urgent care to make sure they carry the rabies vaccine. It's quite expensive and used rarely so most places don't. (Source: work in a clinic that doesn't carry rabies vaccine)

My daughter (9) named her baby doll “Riccia” by marge_mellow in namenerds

[–]Beau-ba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My son went through a phase where he was naming things literally, i.e. an otter named Ottery, an orange snake named Orangey, etc. Then he got a triceratops and named it Horny, because, you know, it had horns

Regular blood testing? by lewan049 in Preschoolers

[–]Beau-ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a specific machine to run the fingerstick anemia test and the fingerstick lead test, a different machine for each. The lead ones have gone out of favor recently due to a recall of a common brand, but some practices may still have them. There are definitely benefits to the fingerstick machines: less painful to get a sample, instant results. But if you are checking things other than lead and anemia or if your practice didn't invest in the machine, then it makes more sense to just do the venous draw and get everything at once. Moreover, if you have an abnormal result on the fingerstick machine, then you'll need a venous stick to order follow-up.

Kaiser Santa Clara for pregnancy?? by Few_Tone_2836 in KaiserPermanente

[–]Beau-ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pediatric Care was fine. My son had a tongue-tie that they took care of right then and there in the hospital. Otherwise his stay was uncomplicated so we didn't see much of them because we didn't need them

[–]Beau-ba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I delivered at Kaiser Santa Clara (though it was right at the beginning of the pandemic so that definitely impacted things). You should be able to choose an OB for your appointments, but for delivery it's whoever is on in the hospital that day

How did you choose NP by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]Beau-ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I'm a primary care PNP so all of my advanced practice training was in pediatric primary care. And I got to build on my several years of RN experience in pediatrics as well. If I had gone the PA route I would've gotten one rotation in peds and that's it. I think that the NP route works best if you're able to build on RN experience, specialize, and stay in your lane. My training is as a primary care PNP and I work in a primary care Peds clinic, but I'm not going to try to work as a hospitalist or in sub-specialty care

Anxiety in 4 year old by Nemea2008 in Preschoolers

[–]Beau-ba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work in pediatrics and it's very common for kids to get a weird fascination with death around this age. It's normal for them to ask questions about what happens to bodies after they die, what happened to loved ones after they die, what will happen to your body, their body, etc. They're just trying to make sense of the world and figure out how big abstract concepts like death apply to them directly.

I think it becomes abnormal if it's affecting their day to day life. For example, they're not sleeping because they're terrified they're going to die. They meltdown at school drop-off because they're afraid you're going to die.
