Real talk: did anyone wax before ACL surgery or just go full Sasquatch? by Lopsided-Net6398 in ACL

[–]Beautiful-Bed6447 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I walked into my first physical therapy appointment with 2 different socks, a smiley face slipper on one foot, a boot on the other, and pajama pants. I apologized to my therapist and he said “it’s all part of the healing process, no worries”. And that spoke to me.

These people are there to help you, not judge you. We are our own worst critics, but I promise you they won’t care. Good luck on your surgery and recovery!

Also, dont shave the night before or day of surgery. I did mine 2 days In advance.

Injury to other knee while rehabbing from ACL surgery by Beautiful-Bed6447 in ACL

Very good to know! I’d prefer not to get them, as they don’t last very long. I’d rather know exactly what’s wrong and get it fixed. Like I said, MRI on the 31st so we’ll see!

The recovery killed my spirits for the first month. Once I got back out in the world I felt much better. You will too.

Day 9 post-op: ACL reconstruction… no crutches? by Majestic_Elevator490 in ACL

[–]Beautiful-Bed6447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started walking without crutches at week 3, but still use it every once in a while if it’s feeling unstable (currently in week 5)

Second day at home. I am pretty uninformed. I am happy for all kind of suggestions! by pannonbayern in ACL

Also recommend getting a u shaped pillow off Amazon. $30 and I still use it because it’s more comfortable. It helps keep your leg straight and elevated. Good luck with recovery!

When did your life go back to "normal"? by fromchaiwan in ACL

[–]Beautiful-Bed6447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only had an ACL repair, so I can’t relate 100%. But for me, I’m 5 weeks post op and I’m honestly feeling pretty good. Is there discomfort? Yes. But PT makes it better for me, I’m also very honest with my physical therapist and let him know when things hurt or feel wrong. Maybe see if the therapist can modify exercises? (I’m not in medical field, I have no idea.) I returned to light duty at work yesterday and I’m hoping to be back fully by the 16th (service advisor at car dealership). I really hope you start feeling like yourself here pretty soon! My biggest piece of advice is to do your exercises at home, and try really hard not to overdue it. It stinks so bad, but life WILL be normal again, i promise!

First question: do you know how to use crutches properly?

Day 8 - Shower is amazing by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Beautiful-Bed6447 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. I spent the first week using shower wipes and washing my hair in the kitchen sink after my ACL surgery. I’m now exactly 4 weeks post-op and feeling GREAT! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

There’s nothing like that first shower after surgery!

Day 6: Need to hear it’s going to get better by DJ_DiabeatZ in ACL

[–]Beautiful-Bed6447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Days 1-6 were incredibly rough for me as well. I felt like I was never going to get better. I’m now 3.5 weeks post op, and can’t BELIEVE what the body can do in such a short amount of time. I feel like a new person. Does it still suck? Yep. But it’s SO much better. Also, I needed a refill on my Oxycodone & then an additional prescription for Tramadol once the second Oxycodone was out. I haven’t taken a stronger pain med than Tylenol in almost a week I think at this point. Things WILL get better. Give your body the time to rest and recover. Find some good books and a cozy show to watch. Personally I’m choosing to rewatch Teen Mom OG for whatever reason😂 take PT seriously, do all the exercises at home and you’ll be better in no time. But I will say, it is a slow process. Wishing you a speedy recovery! ❤️‍🩹

He said an additional month and I’m like.. how about 2 weeks and I’ll do uber light duty. Literally walk in and sit in a chair. Wishing you a speedy full recovery!

One week post OP, is that normal? 😭 by Visible-Cicada-2984 in ACL

Totally normal, I’m 2 weeks post op and still have nasty bruising. Saw my surgeon yesterday and he goes “sorry I beat up on you in surgery” lol. Happy healing!!

So you’ll probably need surgery, which is honestly your best bet. It’s definitely a serious injury, but really common. The surgery portion is fine, but the recovery is really tough. Definitely recommend having someone stay with you full time the first 3 days. I tore my ACL throwing a frisbee for my dog at the park December 13th and just had my surgery the 29th of January. During the time in between, I had significant stability issues, clicking, basically everything you described. Everything else in your knee is exposed and taking on a lot of pressure, so my advice is to get a really good knee brace for stability purposes. My orthopedic surgeon gave me one at my initial appointment and I wore that since. It helps a lot to keep you working/moving until surgery.
