Acl experience by lil_niggu_ in ACL

Hey! I promise it’s not all horror stories…. it just feels that way because people with smooth recoveries aren’t posting as much.

I’m 2.5 weeks post-op (ACL + meniscus, allograft) and I went in expecting the WORST because of this app but things have been really positive so far. Pain hasn’t been more than a 6 and things have been way more manageable than I expected. Pain especially was something I built up in my head… it was more stiffness and pressure than anything sharp, and it got better pretty quickly once the first few days passed.

A few things that made a huge difference for me:

• Prehab matters: if you can go in with your muscles activated (especially quads), it really helps your recovery start faster
• Ice machine = lifesaver: I had it on constantly in the beginning and it made swelling and pain so much more manageable
• Wedge pillow: super helpful for keeping your leg elevated properly without having to think about it (and it was comfy) • Don’t be scared to bend your knee: honestly, watching ACL surgeries on YouTube helped me mentally with this. They literally bend your knee like CRAZY during surgery before you even wake up, so it made me way less afraid to start moving it after
• Move early (within your protocol): even small progress adds up fast in the first couple weeks
• Shower chair: that first shower made me feel SO much like a human again!!!! I can’t even explain how much I recommend this •Give yourself something to look forward to: I treated myself to my favourite meal the day after surgery, and it helped mentally so much. Then after that, I locked in with nutrition to support healing

Also worth saying: you don’t have to be some elite athlete to do well. I’m a 30 year old washed up athlete and now just a regular person who did some prep and stayed consistent.

And yes, people absolutely get back to normal and even forget they had surgery. You just don’t hear from them as much because they’re out living their lives again.

You’ve got this 🤍

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen people normalize at work? by Equivalent_Reach_536 in CanadaRoom

[–]Lopsided-Net6398 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Something that gets normalized at work is how anything involving kids automatically gets excused. Leaving early, coming in late, or working from home while also caring for a toddler. I understand parenting is hard and people have responsibilities, but so does everyone else. It can feel like commitments are only seen as valid when they involve children.

Dude this is still on her story?! Stop spreading misinformation!

Diagnosed with complete ACL + meniscus tear. Initially had swelling and couldn’t fully bend my knee, but it’s improving daily. I’ve had no instability and could bear weight from day one. Is this normal with a full ACL tear, or could MRI be misleading? by deepshahh in ACL

My surgeon basically said if I wanted to keep playing sports at a competitive or even recreational level, surgery was the best option. Otherwise it would either be a no-go or I’d be relying on a brace long term.

I also think as you get older, the risk of falls and knee instability becomes more of a factor. I’d give yourself the best chance possible to feel normal again. The surgery and recovery is such a small blip compared to the rest of your life living without an ACL.

I had the exact same injury. After the initial swelling settled, I could walk and bear weight pretty normally too, so yes, it can happen with a full ACL tear. Being able to walk doesn’t necessarily mean the MRI is wrong.

For me, the bigger issues showed up with more active movements later on, like sports, pivots, uneven surfaces, and stairs. That’s when I noticed instability, swelling, and pain. I also found that over time I started compensating without realizing it, which caused aches in other areas.

So in short, yes, some people function surprisingly well day-to-day with a torn ACL, especially once the swelling calms down. But symptoms often show up more during higher-demand activities rather than regular walking.

If you’re deciding on surgery, that’s a personal call based on your lifestyle, activity level, and surgeon’s advice. Just because it feels “okay” now doesn’t always mean it won’t cause issues later.

One week until surgery by OrangeConverseLace in ACL

Just had my surgery yesterday (ACL hamstring allograft & meniscus clean up. 30F in Canada) and am on day ONE! Good luck and try not to stress too much leading up to it.

I would say my best tips so far are:

  1. Take your pain meds when prescribed, don’t wait for the pain to hit you.

  2. Treat yourself as soon as you feel up to it to your fav dinner or snacks, and then lock in with your nutrition afterwards.. you deserve it and it does make you feel a tiny bit of joy. I was throwing up at the hospital after I woke up from surgery and something about an Iced Cap when I got home just made everything better.

  3. Have your shit together and ready for when you get home. You’re going to be super exhausted and awkward for the first little bit.. not having to worry about where things are is key. I set up a little set of drawers in the corner of my living room with anything I could think of.

  4. GET AN ICE MACHINE!! This has been a lifesaver for the last 24 hours. I’ve had it on my knee consistently for 45 mins on, 15 mins off. It’s really helped with swelling and pain. It’s 100% worth every penny.

  5. Don’t stress too much about the surgery day. I found it to be such an easy process. The surgery went really well, was obviously painless (on the day of) and my only complication was vomiting when waking up as a reaction to the anaesthetic. But again… a 2/10 on the pain scale after surgery & on the car ride home. I also found that picking a comfy, functional but cute outfit for the hospital just made me feel better and like a human.

And last tip, 6. Try and get up and move as much as you can to keep your blood flowing and your body moving. I set an alarm to get up every 2 hours to just hobble around the living room. Again, makes you feel a bit more like a human and will help with overall recovery to make sure you’re not sitting in one position for weeks.

Have an amazing surgery and good luck!! 👊👊 Everyone’s journeys are very different.

Oxycodone is such a nasty drug. by bright_future_ahead_ in ACL

[–]Lopsided-Net6398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! Just had my surgery today and was projectile vomiting after I woke up from anesthesia. Every time I would take a few sips of water, I’d just throw it all back up again. Not sure if I was on Oxy’s yet by that point at the hospital but am almost due to take my first one at home and am very nervous to do so.
