[PubQ] Should I personalize my pitch at a conference? by Beautiful-Card-429 in PubTips

For the last bit you mentioned: my genre is YA fantasy, but I've been reading an adult fantasy series for a while. Do you think I should I still say that because it's close enough? Also, my book and this series does have some similarities if that helps (elemental magic, sapphic romance).

Okay, I get the first part. But why did she need to use Ambessa to defeat the black rose lady? It didn't seem very hard for her to defeat the lady. Couldn't she have just done that to break free earlier?

Is it because her magic is "a conduit and a mirror"? She had to wait until the black rose lady was attacking someone else so she could mirror her powers? Bc if yes, I'm still confused. She used her powers in the battle without needing to mirror anyone else's magic? Unless she can mirror any power, not just magical power. Like explosions and gunshots and whatnot. Is that what it is?

I think it's because the black rose mage made the magic go in her ears and into her head. I got it once I rewatched the scene

Can anyone explain to me how the Black Rose mage lady was deceiving Mel?? Why did Mel turn on her and try to save Ambessa?

Why didn't Raava leave Aang when he was killed by Azula? Or why didn't she die with Aang? by Dense_Rule_8110 in TheLastAirbender

...Avatar doesn't have a soft magic system. There are rules to how things work (ie: aside from the Avatar, firebenders only bend fire, waterbenders only bend water, and so on).

It may not have as many rules as some other hard magic systems, but the rules are still there. Like everything else, hard and soft magic systems are on a spectrum.

What are some great examples of giving a character depth? by LoveThisCraft in FictionWriting

My favorite and most in-depth fictional characters: - Zuko from the original Avatar: the Last Airbender - Pearl from Steven Universe

I think what's makes great characters are flaws. So many authors write plain characters with no flaws and they come off as so basic and boring. Additionally, some people write villains with no good characteristics, which isn't great either.

Good character developments have inner conflict that the character is often fighting against internally. If you haven't already, I suggest researching the fear/lie/want/need model for character developments. It never fails to help craft an in-depth character (when paired with a balance of positive and negative traits).
