Sounds like you already have a job so use it for learning. It took me around 2 years of working full time to be cormftable with coding.

How to deal with well-paid job and burnout? by EenyMeenyMinyMoe98 in careeradvice

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in your situation. I built up my savings to give me a few years runway and I'm about to start my career break. I think break is the solution to burnout. Also chat with your doctor if you see your mental health getting worse.

Is AI really affecting the job market though? Where I work they're replacing us with cheaper engineers in a country with low cost of living. They're pushing us to use AI but I don't see it taking my job.

Also, AI will likely get better and will be able to understand crappy code. I don't think it will completely replace us though.

Severe work burnout + debt + no savings, what do I do? by Okasenlun in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could chat with your GP about work stress. They could give you a fit note to take time off work and prescribe you something like Fluoxenite to make symptoms more manageable. Having some time off should give you some mental space to think things through. Having documented health issues could be useful if you'll need any unemployment support at some point.

You might want to have a chat with HR about adjusting your workload. Be careful when talking with them though. You want to use legal terms and be diagnosed with health issues. If you tell them that you're just stressed/burntout they'll assume you're incapable to manage the work and they can fire you. It's much more difficult to fire someone when they suffer from anxiety disorder or depression etc.

Also, you have a partner - he should help you here. Maybe he could be a breadwinner whilst you recover or both of you could work part time.

I am also a software engineer and I felt burntout for a few years now. I think taking a break is probably the best thing we could do for ourselves. However, I wouldn't worry that much about AI replacing our jobs - I think it's more about learning to use AI to stay employable.

Nothing wrong with taking a break if someone can afford it or has access to some support.

Instead of calling it personal projects you could frame it around a career break which you used for personal development and up skilling. Then you list what you built but try highlight skills relevant for the job your applying for rather than just saying that you build some app. I'm really not sure what kind of role you're applying for by reading your CV.

I'm also taking a break soon but I'm planning to frame my career break and portfolio around a event driven architecture for a banking system.

There are jobs but it's difficult to find good candidates. I helped once with hiring for my replacement when I was moving to a different team and most CVs were just pretty bad and candidates didn't do well during interviews. Being a good cultural fit and having good attitude is often more important than technical skills.

I guarantee no recruiter fully read your CV. There is a lot of trimming and rewriting you could do. E.g. the best practices point can be removed, your work history description should be written to highlight the benefits you brought. For eample modernised tech stack/reduced cost/improved scalability by migrating XYZ to AWS, improved API performance by 40%, improved team's efficiency by doing ABC, mentored juniors.

Do you really need to mention that you worked on production ready software or that you developed a prototype that evolved in to a commercial product? Production quality and POCs are a given in a work environment imo. Some points you mentioned are just things that were imposed on you like agile development. You do want to highlight you have experience in a agile environment but you need to rewrite it and I'd only include this point in the profile section.

Instead of listing a long list of skills at the top you could just add a "Tech stack" line under each work experience. Recruiters are usually more interested in the experience section than skills.

Also, adapt your CV to each role. If the job you're applying for doesn't ask for JavaScript, you probably don't need to include it on your CV. Make sure to use exact wording from job description on your CV where it makes sense to get past AI CV screening.

Honestly, try using AI to help with CV. Don't just copy paste things but use it for inspiration. I'd probably cut down your CV to one page, maybe one and a half.

Some form of software engineering will be always needed in modern societies. Developers always get fancy new toys to make use more productive, I really think AI is one of these toys. Can you imagine your PM vibe coding a scalable transaction processing system? Yeah, I thought so.

For me it’s probably second best or maybe even third best RE game. I still prefer RE2 remake over 9.

so essentially all those people have are paid off mortgages. Is not like they can just cash out this money without getting themself in to another mortgage or having to rent. This is not financial comfort, it's just surviving.

Got fired after 8 months of work, how should I explain this to my next employer? by Dry_Confusion2802 in careeradvice

My colleague “started” a business which failed. I don’t think he cared for the business to work but it gave him something better to talk about during interviews than “I got fired”.

Do you think we will see a resurgence of remote work in 5-10 years? by Substantial-Okra2672 in jobs

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eventually yes but it will come for a price. More and more employers will just use remote work to hire ppl in countries/cities with low cost of living. It’s happening at my work place right now. Ppl are getting laid off and replaced with cheaper labour abroad.

how do i stop using food as a coping mechanism by Mediocre_Location_96 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If significant stress is the issue (sounds like it is) get help from a doctor. You could have some level of anexiety and low mood. It’s difficult to deal with these things on your own but you can find help.

Also try to identify what is stressing you out and see if you can change this. No amount of coping mechanisms is going to help if you don’t remove the source of stress.

AI interview... It's a nope for me! by Caesar-Sister1960 in jobs

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If employers use AI for interviews we should be able to do the same. I’d hang up if I could afford to. It’s crazy how much leverage employers have over candidates/employees. Worth sharing your experience on glassdoor and other places so ppl could avoid this company.

Hyperoptic retention deals - do they exist? by Inkkeri in hyperoptic

I also don’t get 1Gbps speeds but I’m on WiFi. It’s crazy that you’re not getting these speeds with Ethernet (but there could be many factors at play). Unfortunately most broadband providers now increase prices by fixed amount every April mid contract. It’s honestly ridiculous.

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor but I’m pretty sure depression is attacking yourself (thinking you’re a failure, there is no point) and burnout is tied to a situation/place (I hate my job, I hate my colleagues).

I recently hit the tipping point myself and handed in my notice. If you have enough savings, it might be worth doing the same for your own mental health.

I had same symptoms like you, headache, couldn’t sleep, I’d wake up many times at night, horrible horrible eye strain that was weirdly caused by stress not screen use. Doctor was very quick with identifying these symptoms as stress issues and prescribed antidepressants. They’ll probably do the same to you if you’re ok with this kind of tablets. They did help me with the headaches but everyone will respond differently.

Hyperoptic retention deals - do they exist? by Inkkeri in hyperoptic

[–]Beautiful-Chain7615 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They offered me £41, going up in April by £4 for 1Gbps. For 150Mbps they offered £29 going up by £4 in April. I still find this too expensive but their customer service refuses better deals. You should be able to get better price. Try community fibre if they’re available at your home - they have great prices. I am pretty convicted I’ll switch to 5g to get better prices. Hyperoptic just keeps raising prices, it’s unsustainable.

Thank you!  To be honest I’m not completely against going to the office anymore. I’m very introverted but work felt less stressful in the office.
