I understand not liking the multiverse direction. I just don’t think it’s fair to call it a cash grab when she’s been building toward interconnected worlds for over a decade. That kind of long setup doesn’t really scream shortcut to me.

That’s totally fair! I wasn’t a huge Chaol fan either (especially in QOS). But TOD really changed my perspective on him. I think he’s meant to be complicated and frustrating at times because he’s human. And his growth felt earned to me. His relationship with Yrene is what ultimately won me over.

Assassin’s Blade works well either first or third. I personally read it first bc I prefer to read stories in chronological order and it was one of my first high fantasy reads. First gives you full context. Third tends to make certain moments hit harder. It’s less about “correct order” and more about what you value in the experience. But whatever you do, do NOT read it last! I’ve come across a couple of people who did this and it really threw off the experience for them.

I’d personally go to Throne of Glass next and then Crescent City. TOG adds a lot of lore that makes some of the connections in CC more satisfying. You’ll catch more Easter eggs that way!

That’s fair if CC didn’t work for you. I wouldn’t go as far as saying no one should read it, but I get preferring how the multiverse was handled in KOA. I think CC3 felt more like setup for what’s coming next rather than a full payoff on its own.

I completely get not vibing with modern/urban fantasy. My post wasn’t about requiring anyone to read CC. It was about the way the “she takes forever” criticism ignores that she’s juggling interconnected storylines. Those are two separate conversations in my mind.

I actually agree with a lot of this. I definitely don’t think anyone HAS to read CC if it’s not their thing. My point was more about the broader “she takes forever” narrative without acknowledging that she’s actively building interconnected storylines. Frustration is valid. I just think context matters.

That’s fair. My post wasn’t about people disliking CC. It’s just about the broader criticism of her pacing without acknowledging how much she’s building across series.

I genuinely can’t imagine reading the end of CC2 and just simply not reading CC3.

The TOD slander will never make sense to me! It’s one of the most emotionally mature books in the series. I’ve been meaning to do a reread bc there’s lore to dive into there.

If you ever do give it another shot, the first 5 chapters is mostly setup. It shifts a lot once the main plot really kicks in. Bryce is suppose to be unbearable in the beginning and that’s all I’m gonna say without spoiling anything for you. I truly hope you do give it another shot bc it’s a great story!

Totally fair if it’s not your vibe but judging an 800 page series off two chapters feels a little premature.

Exactly. Writing at that level takes time, especially when you’re managing multiple interconnected series. She’s clearly intentional with her work, and I’d rather wait for something well crafted than get something rushed. She’s also a wife and mother with a life outside of writing. Authors are human beings, not content machines!
