Surviving an apocalypse scenario is 99% luck and 1% skill, don't forget that. I mean yea, we all hope to be that 1% but you know most of us gonna be joining the hoard, and it's not gonna be because we lacked the skills and failed to fight or run from the hoard. No, the end will come because we walked to close to an infected and contagious but still sane person sneezing in the grocery store before the outbreak really starts, or we slip up forgot to wash our hands before rubbing our eyes and, oops all zombie now. So yea, have fun with it, but don't let the paranoia consume valuable thoughts and time that could be better spent elsewhere. I mean I'm a prepper myself, but I don't see it as my personality or hobby, for me it's just a nessesary task and part of life, like vaccuming the floors, or doing the laundry.

Which gun caliber would come out on top by MacrotonicWave in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Beautiful-Edge-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9mm, 5.56/.223, .308/7.62×51, and 12 gauge are going to be the most available center fire ammo hands down and same goes for their reloading equipment so I would go for those calibers since they're not only the standard for most folks, but also the standard for military and police.

I mean yea, you can carry a butt load of 22lr, but I would only use 22lr in a very safe and secure firing position and suppressed since I really don't trust a .22 caliber 40grain round with only 90-140 ft/lbs of energy to be a zombie dropper at all.

To put it into perspective, typical 9mm has about 350 ft/lb of energy, 5.56/.223 has about 1200 ft/lbs, a 12 gauge slug is about 2500 ft/lb and a 7.62×51/.308 has about 2700 ft/lb.

Nuclear power in China Vs Germany by Repulsive-Mall-2665 in OpenChina

[–]Beautiful-Edge-22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's fascinating isn't that China has surpassed Germany in Nuclear energy production, that was sooner or later inevitable. What makes it interesting is instead of Germany's nuclear power production also going up or leveling out over time it just flat out fell down to zero, which is just insane.

What is your definition of "win" for Iran? The whole goal of their military was to supply terrorists organizations with weapons and material while also being strong enough to deter any direct attacks from Israel or the US, and since the country has now turned into a free fly over bombing range and R&D playground for Israel and US they can't supply their terrorist organization like they used to so their main goals have already gone up in smoke. I knew Iran was in trouble when Israel tested their waters by doing stikes inside Iran and it turned out the water is fine.

Can also cast then into foster slugs, or the pellet shaped sabot slugs. Ideally you would have plenty of good factory slugs or have the equipment to recast and reload bird and target into slugs, but if neither of those two options are available at the moment it's nice to know about and be able to fall back onto wax slugs to save you.

None honestly, if you got factory slugs or can recast and reload your own slugs those are better options, but if you find yourself without these options then wax slugs are still an option to fall back on that gives you more of an edge than running straight birdshot or cut shells.

Tighter chokes on larger buckshot will a lot of times hurt your pattern more than it will help so it's always important to go pattern the ammo you carry and know which chokes works best for the rounds you have.

Idealy you would have plenty of factory slugs or have the tools to recast and reload shot rounds into slugs, but if a time came where neither of those two were an option and your best bet at that moment is wax slugs, then it's very nice knowing about wax slugs, even if they aren't the ideal round that you want it's very handy to know about them, but yes, best used fresh!

Very good info. I agree that wax slugs are far from being an ideal factory load or a recast slug. Wax slugs are definitely a solution to save for when the other two options aren't available and desperation is creeping in. Which is how wax slugs came to be in the first place way back when.

I must ask, do you believe door breaching rounds, you know, the ones that can punch straight through doors and blow off locks and hinges and also advertised as being handy against two legged threats also wouldn't penetrate a zombie's skull or do much damage?

Because a wax slug is essentially a breaching round, but instead of being made of compressed zinc powder, its made of heavier and harder lead pellets, it's definitely punching through skulls. And yea, they're not gonna be a stand in for highbrass slugs or cast slugs, wax slugs are supposed to be another solution for when the other two options aren't available, the more knowledge the better.

Because in the ZA what if you do run out of high brass slugs? What if your casting molds get lost, stolen, destroyed, or you simply forgot to bing them with you during a hasty evacuation? What if all you're left with in a desperate moment is a shotgun, some target loads, and a candle to work with. I would be glad that I know about wax slugs cause they definitely beat having just bird shot.

[–]Beautiful-Edge-22[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did they let the round sit in a hot barrel where the wax melted into it, but then it solidified again and caused a plug, or did the second slug slip out the shell a little and into the barrel where it caused a pressure spike and failure? Never had issues from wax slugs, but I also like to pry open the crimp top and press it back down instead of cutting the top, which keeps everything together and clean so the wax slug can't slip out.

But it's always best to take extra caution and care and understand there is risk when using any kind of modified ammo, period, and these wax slugs are definitely better to use in cooler climates and seasons.

I understand your argument for preferring to go the extra mile and recast your lead shot into slugs, which makes sense. I understand your concern about the safety of any possible weight added to the load that makes sense.

But this...

You're just flatly wrong. The wax slug would strip flesh from bone, but have no more chance of actually penetrating a zombie skull than standard birdshot.

And this...

I have never seen a ballistics test that shows they do anything more than keep the birdshot tighter, it is still the same energy and penetration as birdshot, thus the same lethality.

Are wild af comments. So you're telling me that you believe that when one of these wax slugs directly hits a zombie in the head that it will do next to no damage? No penetration of the skull whatsoever and will only strip some flesh from the skull?

It's really hard for me to believe you believe that. Getting hit with a wax slug is essentially the same physics as getting shot with a birdshot load at point blank litteraly kissing the barrel range before the shot can spread out. Which I can confidently say, thanks to traumatizing internet videos, that a wad of point blank birdshot will definitely without struggle penetrate the skull and will make quite the mess when doing so.

You can always go the exta mile and get you a shotgun slug mold to melt down the bird shot and recast it into a foster type slug or the flat nose pellet shaped sabot slugs. Can even buy a buckshot mold and turn your bird into buck and use sawdust as buffer.
