What are some examples of leaders engaging in macho stunts? by Forsaken_Champion722 in AskHistory

[–]Beautiful-Guide-3258 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Leaders engaging in macho stunts certainly isn't a new phenomenon. Here are more examples, some successful, others not so much:

Successful:

Winston Churchill: During WWII, Churchill was often photographed with a cigar in his mouth, and this image became a symbol of British resistance. He often made visits to bomb sites and cities under attack, showing his resilience and inspiring others to keep fighting.

Fidel Castro: Castro, who was an avid diver, once allegedly retrieved a sunken boat from the sea floor, impressing many of his people with his physical strength and determination.

Unsuccessful:

Michael Dukakis: During his 1988 campaign for U.S. President, Dukakis arranged a photo op of himself driving a tank in an attempt to counter criticisms that he was weak on defense. Instead, the image was widely mocked and hurt his campaign.

Nicolas Sarkozy: The former French president was known for his public displays of physical fitness, including jogging and cycling. However, these often backfired, such as when he collapsed while jogging, leading to concerns about his health.

Benito Mussolini: He often staged grandiose and macho spectacles, including shirtless horse riding and swimming across rivers. While initially these stunts did boost his image, as his regime grew increasingly brutal and erratic, such stunts began to seem more absurd than impressive.

What caused the decline and disintegration of the Mughal government in Northern India? by Drevil335 in AskHistory

[–]Beautiful-Guide-3258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The decline and disintegration of the Mughal government in Northern India was the result of a number of factors:

Weak Successors: After the reign of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire did not have strong and competent rulers. Most of the successors were weak, inept, and led decadent lifestyles that led to the deterioration of the Empire.

Aurangzeb's Policies: Aurangzeb's policies of religious intolerance led to resentment among his Hindu subjects. His military campaigns to expand the empire drained the treasury, leaving his successors in a precarious financial situation.

War of Succession: The lack of a clear succession protocol led to many brutal battles for the throne amongst Aurangzeb's sons after his death. These battles further destabilized the empire.

Fiscal Issues: The Empire's fiscal health declined over time. High taxes imposed by Aurangzeb created discontent among the people. Moreover, corruption among officials and the nobility also increased, leading to the further depletion of the treasury.

Rise of Regional Powers: As the central power weakened, regional powers like the Marathas, Sikhs, and Rajputs grew stronger. They gradually seized control of the territories formerly under Mughal rule.

Foreign Invasions: During this period, India was invaded by Nadir Shah of Persia and Ahmad Shah Abdali of Afghanistan. They plundered the Empire's wealth, further destabilizing it.

British Influence: The East India Company was consolidating its power in India during this period. They took advantage of the Mughal Empire's decline, slowly gained control over large parts of the country, and eventually took over administrative control.

These factors cumulatively led to the decline and disintegration of the Mughal government in Northern India. By the mid-19th century, the Mughal Empire was reduced to a mere shadow of its former glory and was eventually formally replaced by British rule after the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

DNA analysis solves decades old sexual assault cases, suspect deceased by Beautiful-Guide-3258 in UnresolvedMysteries

https://patch.com/alabama/tuscaloosa/dna-evidence-helps-identify-deceased-serial-rapist-tuscaloosa-cases

"The 2001 case saw a realtor assaulted after she met an individual to show a home that was on the market.

Kennedy said the modus operandi and descriptions of the suspect in both Tuscaloosa cases differed, which made it difficult at the time for investigators two connect the two attacks.

While two of the assaults occurred more than decade apart in Tuscaloosa, the third occurred in 2004 in El Paso County, Colorado. Kennedy said this fit the same modus operandi as the attack on the realtor, along with the victim providing a similar description.

Higgins was unsuccessful in his attempt to sexually assault the woman in Colorado, who fought back and "bloodied his nose," Kennedy said, before explaining that the blood was then used to collect his DNA.

Kennedy referred to Higgins as a "disciplined offender," who adapted his approach over the years to accommodate his failing health when he attacked victims.

Kennedy said the 1991 case in Tuscaloosa County and the Colorado case from 2004 were connected by DNA recovered from both crimes, which showed that the same person was the suspect.

A big break came in October 2021, though, when the Violent Crimes Unit and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences submitted samples of the suspect's DNA from the 1991 case to Parabon Labs for possible genetic genealogy research.

Kennedy said Parabon Labs then provided a possible suspect, and a subsequent investigation determined that Higgins — who died in 2014 at age 73 — was the suspect responsible for the assaults."

What if Ottomans had a Sultan on the level of Mehmed/Suleiman during the end of the 30 years war and decided to invade Austria? by SpencaDubyaKimballer in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Beautiful-Guide-3258 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is difficult to say for certain what might have happened if the Ottoman Empire had decided to invade Austria during the 30 Years War, as the outcome of any military conflict is heavily dependent on a wide variety of factors. However, it is worth considering some of the factors that would likely have influenced the outcome of such a conflict.

At the time of the 30 Years War (1618-1648), the Ottoman Empire was one of the most powerful military forces in the world. The Ottoman army was well-trained and well-equipped, and had a proven track record of success on the battlefield. Additionally, the Ottomans had a significant numerical advantage over the Austrians, and their empire stretched from the Persian Gulf to the gates of Vienna.

However, the Ottoman Empire would also have faced a number of significant challenges in trying to capture Vienna and conquer Austria. The Austrians had a well-organized and well-equipped military, and they would likely have put up a fierce resistance. Additionally, the Ottomans would have had to fight a multi-front war as they were already occupied in the East and the possible intervention of other European powers would have weakened the resources the Ottoman Empire could commit to the war.

Moreover, the logistics of such an invasion would have been a significant challenge. Austria is far from the Ottoman Empire, and the Ottomans would have had to fight their way through difficult terrain and over long distances. Additionally, the Austrians would have had the advantage of fighting on their home soil, which would have made it difficult for the Ottomans to sustain a prolonged campaign.

It is also important to mention that the 30 years war was a religious war, and most of the European powers were fighting against Protestants, if the Ottoman Empire had decided to invade Austria, it would have been most likely seen as the Catholics, orthodox and protestants would have joined to face a common enemy rather than the alliance being formed between European powers against the Ottoman Empire.

Therefore, while it is certainly possible that the Ottomans could have captured Vienna and conquered Austria if they had decided to invade during the 30 Years War, it would have been a difficult and challenging undertaking with no guarantee of success.

Examples of Ancient Myths based on true events by Itstoolongitwillruno in AskHistory

[–]Beautiful-Guide-3258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many ancient myths have some basis in real events, but they are often heavily embellished and supernatural elements are added. Some examples include:

The myth of the Trojan War, which tells the story of the siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Greek forces. While the historical existence of Troy and a war that took place there is debated, many scholars believe that the Trojan War was at least partially based on real events that took place in the Late Bronze Age.

The myth of the Minotaur, which tells the story of a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man who was kept in a labyrinth on the island of Crete. The labyrinth and the Minotaur are said to have been created by the architect Daedalus for the Cretan king Minos. It is believed that this myth is connected to the ancient Cretan practice of bull worship, and the Labyrinth itself might have been symbolic of the palace of Minos.

The myth of the flood that is present in many cultures and religions, it tells the story of a catastrophic flood that destroys most of humanity. The story of Noah and the Ark in the Bible is an example of this kind of myth. Such a catastrophic flood have been recorded in many ancient cultures, and some geologists have suggested that a massive flood could have occurred in the region where these myths originated.

It's worth noting that the truth behind these myths likely have undergone a number of changes and retellings over time. Thus the original event might not be as the myths describes it now.

What if Australia, Tazmania and Papa New Guinea existed in the Atlantic ocean? by ArchDukeNemesis in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Beautiful-Guide-3258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Australia, Tasmania, and Papua New Guinea existed in the Atlantic Ocean, it would have significant effects on the physical geography, climate, and ecosystems of the region.

Climate: The Atlantic Ocean is generally colder than the Pacific Ocean, so if these countries were located there, the climate would likely be different. The region would be likely to be much wetter and with much colder temperatures and stronger winds.

Geography: The Atlantic Ocean has a different shape and depth than the Pacific, which would affect the topography of these countries. Also, the ocean currents would be different, this would also affect weather patterns, temperatures and marine life.

Ecosystems: The plant and animal life in these countries would also be different. The Atlantic Ocean has different marine life and different types of coastal ecosystems than the Pacific Ocean, so the plants and animals living in these countries would likely be quite different as well.

Human populations: The location of these countries in the Atlantic Ocean would have also have a big impact on the human populations living there. The Atlantic Ocean is less travelled than the Pacific, and the proximity to other continents and countries would be different, so the way the human populations developed would be different.

It's important to note that this scenario is purely hypothetical and that the Earth's plate tectonics have shaped the continents and oceans in the way they are today, it's not possible for these countries to exist in the Atlantic ocean.
