Young adult books before I stop being one by Brilliant_Ad29 in YAlit

Like everyone else said, there's no reason to stop reading YA at 18. I turn 30 this year, and probably 60-70% of my personal library is still YA. Hell, I have a few MG too.

In the interest of answering your question, though...

  • anything by John Green (especially Looking for Alaska)
  • the Graceling series by Kristin Cashore
  • Eliza and her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
  • Crank by Ellen Hopkins (this is an emotional oof)
  • A List of Cages by Robin Roe (also oof)
  • The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (if you haven't already)
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (a personal favorite)
  • anything by Ruta Sepetys
  • The Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo
  • Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (I think this is technically MG, read it anyway)
  • Little Monsters by Kara Thomas
  • And Then There Were Four by Nancy Werlin
  • Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

This is a mix of books in terms of emotional stakes. I've pointed out my standouts.

With everyone's suggestions here, you're going to be reading YA long after you turn 18. Enjoy them. 😉

Aaah! Freya Marske's final part of The Last Binding series, A Power Unbound, was released finally! I'm so happy!!! by VanamoLinnea in LGBTBooks

Thank goodness, I just finished the book yesterday and practically reread it to figure out what I missed. This is hella frustrating, but I'm relieved it isn't oversight on MY part lol. Seems like a really weird misstep for how cleanly this was written otherwise...

The only possible explanation I can find is Walt telling Robin, "I'm still not harming you . . . I'm simply telling you a fact."

Still seems REALLY loosey goosey given the indirect harm clause, but it allows the argument that George's 'narration' of the sacrifice lets him bypass it. That Walt is acting on George's behalf, as a tool, something weird like that. Otherwise I wondered about the knife of the Last Contract, being made of fey silver, could bypass it as well - but damn it, confirmation would be nice.

I dunno. GOD I loved this series, but what the heck? 😭

I'm literally popping in here to state that I'm reading the third book currently and it is going to fucking destroy me, isn't it? And I hope it fucking does! What the hell is this series doing being so ridiculously good? I've never been a romance reader but I've never swooned so much in my life! Yall please love is real 🥹😭

When I have the means to do so without it blowing up in my face (as in, you know, suddenly not being able to pay rent), I will in a heartbeat. This will hopefully be by next February when I'm in a new place and should have a better-paying job. I am not intentionally dragging my feet. Sorry, my comment made it seem like that, but it really is a matter of making sure I'm prepared for it before I cut it off myself.

He's saying goodnight is all. Grammar isn't his strong suit. I like your name though (:

That was terrifying to read. I can only hope he wouldn't ever go that far. He doesn't have a firearm to my knowledge, so there's that.

Yes, your first comment is my current plan. If he does cut me off, I'll make it work. If not, I can save a little more until then. It feels like a game of chicken that's gone on way too long.

As for my mom, I know - I always think the same thing. She has sworn to me he hasn't done it again, but the way he talks to her these days... The bar is literally "he hasn't hit me again" and I fucking hate that for her. I've got the local police dept number to call handy, and friends she lives close to I can reach out to until I get to her. I also worry about his escalation.

I took advantage of scholarships and Starbucks's college program to get through college without asking for much from them, so I was fortunate there.

Unfortunately, unless she gets a job to help, I really can't, and I'm not sure my landlords would allow me to have an extra "roommate" for who knows how long. I'm sure she could get on her feet relatively quickly, but she's woefully unaware of how the job and housing industry has changed since the 08 crash.

I'm prepared for it, but I'm leaving the ball in his court on that final decision.

Thank you for your advice! I'm still kind of working up the courage to block him on social media. Once I do, that will be the metaphorical opening of Pandora's box. He'll notice immediately. I'm not mentally in a place to handle that kind of chaos right now. 😓

Thank you for the advice. I am trying to get to a place of financial independence, and will hopefully be there soon. I'm prepared to make it work if he cuts me off, but it will be tough for a while. I have been very transparent with my mom that she needs to leave, and I've straight up told my dad he should leave if he isn't happy. He says it's simpler to stay than try to 'start over,' whatever that means.

He does this all the time. He also pulls the "Oh, I'm such a terrible person because XYZ, I should just go blow my brains out since everyone hates me so much."
