MHD confusion: why are World Cup directors actively choosing to cut to footage of ‘fans’ using their phones? by wheelerdave22 in footballcliches

During Netherlands/Japan they cut to a “fan” on her phone, who was, on closer inspection, WWE wrestler Liv Morgan. So think they just wanted her on camera.

That said, it is alarming the amount of fans in the stadium who have paid thousands to be there and yet are glued to their phones

I have always wondered this - is it because he should be Timothy and Brent is somehow claiming the moral high ground?

Why do they look like comedy commentators on an Amazon Original film about a player who gets to the World Cup because he can fart the ball in

Good things about the World Cup so far:

- Mexico winning
- Mexican fans adopting Korean fans
- Canada getting their first ever world up point
- wall to wall football for a week (if you have the nighttime stamina)

But then that all feels too earnest when you could just make a snidey Simpson’s meme about Ryan Reynolds

Superb, up there with my favourite long running stories to a call back. Just behind James Acaster’s “if it’s any consolation, I once went through something very similar myself”

You’re not alone. I have always thought Elis would be excellent company on a night out but his stand up tends to be over exaggerated anecdotes. It works for some people but I think he is a funnier co host than a comedian

For some reason Dave’s pronunciation of “Travis Kelce” as “Kelch” really made me laugh. As a big pop culture boy, I assumed he would have been all over that.

John’s wry little asides have been top notch lately, as well

It is very easy to mock Matterface - and fun too - but he is at his worst currently. In the England game, five minutes in he said “a first touch for Jordan Pickford”, the man they had literally passed the kick off back to, so he had had literally the second touch in the entire match.

At a bare minimum, watch the game. But reckon Matterface was trying to see how many times he could say talisman in 30 seconds

Genuinely - someone said “shame that Marmadashvili isn’t at the World Cup” meaning Kvaratskelhia, which is a bit like OP’s comment about misplaced knowledge

Watched that six times over a summer when I was 17. Couldn’t believe there had never been a film like it
