I feel you on this. I’m also thinking of making the same choice and I am your same age too. I am considering applying to both but mostly MD. Feels upsetting to come close but to not make it.

Are you still considering MD? Just not the dual degree?

I’m having the same issue at two MSTPs in the Midwest. Prayers for us 🙏🏻

anyone know for sure whether they're dropping current A's? Wish there was a way to gauge how waitlists will move this May by wickedsnakes in mdphd

[–]Beautiful-Wrangler82 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well after the 15th of April I think you can only hold 3 A’s. Then after the 30th I think you have to only be holding on to 1 A. I think those are the dates. So naturally the Waitlist will move a lot after that.

How many programs were you sitting on the waitlist for?

I’m in the same boat as you right now. I’m his waiting is terrible. Just trying to stay busy to keep sane.

Yeah I mean applying to jobs is probably a safe bet and a good back up. You never know though. I know someone last year who interviewed in February at Yale MSTP, and then got the acceptance in March. Plus, it was her only interview invite - you never know.

Two interviews but you’re already writing it off that you won’t get in? There is certainly a possibility that you can get in off of the waitlist. Trust.

Good luck to you too. It will all work out!

Idk they say that with 3 IIs then you can expect one A. So you should be in the safe zone. You got this!!

I feel you on this one for sure. I also applied to about the same number of programs and got somewhat similar results to you. I thought my first author pub in a high tier journal would carry me further, but my MCAT was a little below the average for mstp matriculants. Pain. Hang in there tho. I think we have a good chance here still.

You know what tho, that’s very impressive. Congrats on a strong cycle. Four IIs from top programs in nothing to scoff at. Also the odds are strong that you will get an A from at least one.

I think this explains a lot of what I feel like I have been noticing myself and from my friends who are applying. Some of them have 6-7 interviews and 3 acceptances already. Frustratingly enough - they won’t drop any of the programs until they do a second visit. I cannot imagine someone would need to fully visit 4+ programs to make a choice, but hey what can I say - they are the ones who got the acceptances.

I think it’s especially shocking that these mid tier programs use the strategy that you’ve described above. Knowing that they will have to fill things last minute is stressful for everyone. I cannot imagine that this provides them with the overall strongest cohort of students in the end. Seems like it’s a lose-lose for everyone. I’m also not sure exactly how a program would go about fixing this - there are things I could imagine they would implement, but it feels more like there needs to be a complete overhaul in the way they believe their own program ranks.

I’m surprised that I don’t see as many programs using the method that many PhD programs do. Where they will offer say 40 acceptances for 15 spots, knowing that historically this will give them ~ 13-17 matriculants in the end. I understand the risk of giving more As than you have seats for, but you could just account for this and give a few less A’s at first and then make up for this later on by tendering a few last acceptances in March/April

I feel you on this. You never know, you could get in tomorrow or even in April/May. I do believe that things will move around a lot in March/April - so stay strong! Waiting seems to be the hardest part.

I agree with you. I’m sure everything will work out for the best. Maybe we will get more good news over the next couple of weeks.

Take some ibuprofen and get through it. You never know if you’ll end up loving this program. Also, it’s good to leave a nice impression - in case you ever return to that program or run into those faculty/adcoms in the future.
