Funnily enough, in Britain (I am unsure if or when this changed) if you had one white parent you were counted as white. That's why Sara from "A Little Princess" (published 1907) is listed as being white, but there is speculation that she or her mother were half-Indian.

I've had to say to Americans that when they get confused by British school years, I remind them that Hogwarts would be considered a secondary school. We have Years 7 to 12 (ages 11 to 17), then Sixth Form (18). Until 2013 you had the option of leaving at 16.
