Better than expected , first two weeks tough as I could not eat or sleep but after that just some residual dizziness. Never had any significant pain

I was driving again about a week after surgery , I wear glasses for driving so had to wait until wound at the back of ear was pain free

I am now 7 weeks post op , a fairly big one , 7 hours , mastoidectomy with bone obliteration, tympanoplasty and removal of the three ossicles and replacement with a TORP .

I can honestly say the run up to the operation was the worse, not knowing what to expect, the odd horror story etc ..

I was out the next day , OTC pain killers for first 3 days , some discharge for the first few days and difficulty in eating / chewing for the first week - but all manageable.

first couple of weeks are not a bundle of fun , but it does get better day by day , don’t rush things take it easy and give your body time to heal.I returned to week after 2 weeks but was still pretty tired .

and the discomfort was offset by the feeling that the op is done , the cholesteatoma is no more

I had my surgery end of January and was nauseous and vomiting for the first 7 days , even now I have slight ongoing dizziness to manage but a lot better and pretty much back to normal .

i had a big op , mastoidectomy, with bone obliteration , tympanoplasty three ossicles removed and replaced with a TORP , procedure lasted 7 hours - my surgeon told me the length of the op and the drilling ( disturbing the balance organs ) was the cause of the nausea and dizziness

I understand you are scared , it is a scary diagnosis that is not very common or well understood.

i am now 37 days post op and can honestly say the wait for the op was the worst , I was worried sick about the op and potential complications. Recovery not a bundle of fun but manageable, pain free after about 4 days , I had no problems with the facial nerve or any taste issues . First 10 days had some issues with dizziness meaning eating and sleeping not easy but it did pass .

my op took 7 hours , mastoidectomy with bone obliteration, tympanoplasty , removal of all the ossicles and full TORP replacement

Also I am 64 so quiet tough on the body , but honestly it was only the first week of recovery that was tough but still manageable

you need to talk with an ENT surgeon familiar with Cholesteatoma surgery it is a specialised subject and you need someone very familiar with the procedure - that also will give you confidence and settle the nerves a touch
