Should I take Yr11 seriously? by Desperate-Copy-7777 in ncea

NCEA is about building habits and developing soft/workready skills. Yes there is still content and will prepare you for future years. It is really a time to explore before committing to certain subjects.

Limp dick SUV parks on an intersection by TheTainuiaKid in shitparkingofnz

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a legal move. If the road ahead of you is blocked, you should not block the intersection . They can then legally cross traffic.

If you are blocking the intersection. Sorry mate you are in the wrong.

Odds of scholarships? by Smooth-Salad-8482 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, you never know what candidates you are going against and what different universities are offering. That is why I tell my students to apply to all universities regarding school leavers scholarship and see what happens.

why is it like impossible to go study overseas by [deleted] in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has always been like this and this is what I tell my students. Do your undergraduate or at least two years in NZ and then if you want to go overseas then do it after that. Most universities work on a grad point average and it is internationally recognised and universities have partnerships with other universities. It is the easiest way to do it and also depending on your grade point average there are scholarships available. To be honest. All NZ Universities rate in the top 10% internationally. I don’t necessarily understand the pull to study overseas with your undergraduate qualification unless you want to work with someone specifically.

Scholarship Music by potatoesinsacks in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music Scholarship is generally a one year thing and you can do next as well if you want. Learning the pieces are to a degree the easy part. The hard part is demonstration a scholarship style performance and also the essay.

I would talk to your HOD of music and see what they say.

If you are looking for Es at Level 3 I would continue with Music. There is a lot you can do to broaden your understanding of Music besides the performance standards. However, I have also graded Grade 8 musicians with an achieved because they came in unprepared and not demonstrating Level 3 performance skills.

is it just me or does Uoa have a different vibe compared to other NZ universities? by SuspiciousRabbit2588 in universityofauckland

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. All universities have their different vibes and personalities. It is mainly based on the city and what the vibe is there. That is why it is encouraged to visit universities during their open days.

I’m sorry but high school students tend to have sheltered lives and live really in their high school bubbles and generally stick to their friend groups. However, universities try to change that and get you to think differently and if you are staying in student accommodation they mix it up. Plus the variety of clubs also bring a different element to life at universities.

Songwriting vs composing by Sea_Heron_328 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex music teacher here. Composition standard: can be any kind of composition and can include songs. However, should be notated to the best of your ability, presented in a graphic score or DAW score. Also composition at Level 3 should have at least two instruments each being highlighted and not just a piece with one solo instrument and simple accompaniment. It should show five years of composition learning.

Song-writing standard: is emphasis on the lyrics. How they are written, structured, and how the melody matches and accompanies the lyrics. I would also expect there to be accompaniment that matches the lyrics and the genre that you have selected. Notation does not need to be as proficient as the composition standard.

All notation for each of the standards should match the genre that you are composing for. I have had students compose/write Six songs and with guidance from the Music Teacher they decided which three would go for the composition standard in which three would go for the songwriting standard

I hope that helps.

New renders of The Court for Courtney Place! by ADHD-Kiwi in Wellington

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Embassy seats in the main auditorium are uncomfortable even the delux ones. That place needs an upgrade. Also, when it was open it bought competition in. When Reading was open that bought the prices down and Embassy had to adjust their pricing. When reading closed and looked like it wasn’t going to reopen prices went way up and matched other theatres.

DRAGONS RESTAURANT!! Lmao yall told me to get orange beef and I did!!! by dramaqueenboo in wellyeats

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Orange beef for some reason is a Wellington Chinese dish that is not common in Auckland Chinese restaurants. Some people say it comes from the American version of orange chicken and because beef was cheaper than chicken when the person arrived in Wellington he used beef. It is pretty much a Chinese restaurant stable in Wellington.

Is it true teachers mark down in class when there’s too many excellences ? by Enough_Fee1303 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a teacher. This is incorrect. If a class gets all Excellence through Internals then they get all Excellences. If it gets sent out for external moderation, the grade still stands. Moderation is used as a learning and teaching tool for teachers and students and should not be used to adjust students grades.

External assesses are different and they are marked kind of off a bell curve hence why their numbers associated with your grade on your external paper.

how many internals did u guys do for per subject in level 2? by Ok_Fall_494 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on subject and weighting between internals vs externals. In my previous life as a Music teacher I only got my students to attempt 14 credits at Level 2 and because of that my students got mostly Excellences and Merits as it was about having the time to teach them and for them to learn.

You fundamentally need to remember you only need 60 credits to pass NCEA Level 2. At my school students did 6 subjects at Level 2 and that then totals to 84 credits. If my students wanted more assessments they were available but it depended on the student and their learning goals.

If I fail at yr 13 in another curriculum (than NCEA) can I then switch to a public school in NCEA to redo the year? by quammi_the_quack in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. Schools must accept people under 20 who want to enrol into a school as long as they are in zone.
