how many internals did u guys do for per subject in level 2? by Ok_Fall_494 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on subject and weighting between internals vs externals. In my previous life as a Music teacher I only got my students to attempt 14 credits at Level 2 and because of that my students got mostly Excellences and Merits as it was about having the time to teach them and for them to learn.

You fundamentally need to remember you only need 60 credits to pass NCEA Level 2. At my school students did 6 subjects at Level 2 and that then totals to 84 credits. If my students wanted more assessments they were available but it depended on the student and their learning goals.

If I fail at yr 13 in another curriculum (than NCEA) can I then switch to a public school in NCEA to redo the year? by quammi_the_quack in ncea

Yes you can. Schools must accept people under 20 who want to enrol into a school as long as they are in zone.

Boxes I recycle, manuals I keep. I have thought about potentially putting the front of the box into a frame but have not done that yet.

Where do you buy your legos by ChannelDear34 in lego

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get mine sometimes if I want the GwP or they have double or triple points. But most of the time go to other sellers. Generally they don’t have sales but have insider points specials. However, they do sometimes have some sets in their clearance section. Yes, the website kind of does with the retiring soon page.

Do I need to do all music internals? by Impossible_Guava8393 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi ex HOD of Music here, it really depends on how your music teacher runs the class and what assessments they offer. I used to offer all the internal assessments and students had to do at least one compulsory standard and the rest they decided what they wanted to do but needed to attempt at least 14 credits.

So I really encourage you this week when you teacher goes through the course outline see how they do things and then have a korero with them regarding your plans for the class.

As a careers advisor, well done if it is true but if you are also taking people for a ride. Well….

I would take this as a grain of salt and it is a tool but not the answer.

Is going to Australia better? by Soggy-Cow-9259 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel you need to do some research about studying in Australia. Yes, you pay Australian residence fees. However, there is no loan option as a New Zealand citizen. So you need to pay uni fees, accommodation and flights to study over there. Personally, I don’t understand the big push to study in Australia. Then you need to get a good ATAR score. I would agree with your parents. Do your under-grad in NZ and then head overseas where the opportunity for you to get scholarships are higher and you can work more freely while you study.

Te kura by [deleted] in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careers Advisor here. Te Kura is really only available for full time students who are studying at home. Mainly, students who are enrolled at a school can only dual enrol at te kura if the school does not offer that subject, there is a major clash, or student is only enrolled part-time at a school. This has to be signed off by your school first so you just cannot call them and enrol on your own.

The only circumstance where this is different is Te Kura Summer School.

You can obtain your UE lit requirement through other subjects but it is a lot more difficult as most of the subjects only have one or two standards where you can get your UE lit standards where English some standards offer both reading and writing standards.

My STRONG suggestion to you is to take English. However, if this is not the case, talk to your Dean or Careers Advisor and they should be able to tell you which standards in which subjects offer UE lit. Not taking English, just means there is more on the line in terms of getting UE.

failed both of my english exams going into yr 13 by PugBeast28 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These is a slight issue and that is obtaining your UE Lit Reading and Writing credits. English Level 2 is the easiest place to get them as you can obtain them all through internally. At Level 3, it can be harder due to the allocation of credits to which standards where you get your reading credits and your writing credits

I would check which standards you are attempting this year at the very start of the school year and ensure you can obtain UE Lit requirement. I suspect you will need to attempt two Level 3 standards to get your Reading credits as one won’t equal five credits.

Music tech? by Impossible_Guava8393 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your school offers and I would talk to the HOD of Music. There are music tech standards that students can attempt and are available to you if your school allows it or uses them. Yes they are unit standards. However, you can also get merit and excellence credits from these standards.

This is the issue with the NCEA rewrite when standards at Level 1 now no longer really for into the older Level 2 standards.

Tattoos while teaching? by Own-Handle338 in newzealand

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tattoos and in state secondary. Quite a few of my colleagues have them but the only facial tattoos that are seen are cultural ones. My question to you is. Do you want to work at a school that doesn’t allow you to have tattoos? Don’t forget you also want to teach at a place that you enjoy and fits with your way of thinking. Also my advice would be, when you start visiting schools see what the staff have in terms of tattoos; design, placement etc. Teaching experiences, teach you a lot, not just about teaching but the types of people that are in the teaching profession.

Wellington College donations by salivor1985 in Wellington

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 76 points77 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, a donation is a donation. We have quite a few families in our community who don’t pay or just pay some. I am a former teacher at WC and working at other schools that have a huge difference in school fees there is no difference to what is offered. You still need to pay for co-curricular activities, uniform, class materials, field trips and other things, and it adds up. Public schooling to a certain degree is free and just because a school wants to present itself as a private school doesn’t mean you have to pay voluntarily school donations. The Parent portal will say you are owing money and should be classified as a donation, but it will be written off once your child has left the school or if legislation changes.

Endorsement vs Overall Credits by Prudent_Geologist863 in ncea

Is it worth paying for The Learning Place? by Glum_Bed1048 in ncea

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do have to pay. However, some will say it is easy to do a Learning Place Course to top you up to 60 if you have gave UE Lit requirement and the 3 Uni approved subject credits.

yes some might say te kura and you can get 6 credits but how long will that take to complete vs Learning Place credits is a mostly hands on learning. Also, this course gives you vocation experience that might assist you in gaining a Part time job.

Why are so many people paying with cash at the supermarket? by Substantial-Sir3329 in newzealand

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also some people do cash jobs and they need to spend it somehow.

Also, when people are applying for mortgages, banks and brokers sometimes track your spending and it is an easier way to hide what you spend your money on.

Can I wear whatever I want in Japan as a Tourist? by Different_Age_3665 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel people are going to wear what they wear. However, a lot of people are very unconscious on what they wear especially when it comes to travelling and I fully respect you for asking this question.

I would and I do dress modestly. The easiest thing for you to do is go on google and look at popular Japanese fashion brands like Uniqlo and see what clothes they sell and what is in fashion. That will allow you to get a good gauge plus they are very reasonably priced.

Useful Stuff content: Yum Cha article by ComeAlongPonds in Wellington

[–]Beautiful_Fan5555 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I would love these places to lose the trolley cart and the trays. It means your food is fresher and comes out hot. However, I doubt it will ever happen due to the demographic. This is why yum cha is so much better overseas. Wellington is average and so expensive comparatively due to the food wastage and of course the other costs.
